Why was LSU football so bad in the '90s?

Such a traditionally strong program with a built-in recruiting base had 7 sub-500 seasons in that decade.
1989 (4-7)
1990 (5-6)
1991 (5-6)
1992 (2-9)
1993 (5-6)
1994 (4-7)
1998 (4-7)
1999 (3-8)
What happened?

Our sub-par recruiting was outdone by our ridiculously shitty coaching.

coming off a top 5 finish, we turned the keys over to Mike Archer, curley, then DiNardo, all mistakes....terrible...did not recover until saban

Our coach with the most promise was killed in plane crash. Substitutes did not deliver.

Bad coaching and even worse recruiting. DiNardo gets shite on, but he was successful at getting recruits to stay home and play for LSU rather than leaving the State.
DiNardo's recruiting doesn't get enough credit bc it's overshadowed by his poor coaching ability.

Really bad coaching hires can ruin any program.
Ask Alabama
Ask FSU
Ask USC

Two words: Mike Archer. Archer drove LSU Football into a ditch. The main culprit was lazy recruiting and no team discipline.

Brett Favre...he made Hallman look like a halway competent coach. It took nearly a decade to undo damage done by the Curley Hallman hiring.

What happened. Crappy coaches until Nick Saban showed up and saved the program.

Joe Dean was cheap and didn’t believe in paying more money for good coaches, or really anything for that matter. Only reason Saban was hired was due to Emmert twisting his arm on Dean’s way out the door

I don't follow LSU real close but I do remember they fell off a cliff after Bill Arnsparger left. He was a pretty quality football coach back in the day.

Too many other power 5 teams in their state they had to recruit against

Combination of bad on field coaching and really good players continually leaving the state.

After Arnsparger, LSU started going downhill starting 1989 that lasted about a decade. LSUs worst ever. Terrible AD, poor facilities and poor coaches and recruiting equals losing season. Top Louisiana recuits went out of state. Saban and Mark Emmert changed all that.

DiNardo was a big upgrade over Mike Archer and Curly Hallman. He actually had a few winning seasons, won 3 bowl games, including beating Notre Dame and a Saban coached Michigan State team.
He left LSU in much better shape than he inherited.
