AD Joe Dean and a complicit board of supervisors made an astounding number of really poor decisions i.e. lack of funding for facilities upgrades/terrible coaching hires/depended entirely on the 'fan-base'/donors to do ALL the heavy lifting !

Some really bad coaching

Soon after 2004 Ed Orgeron coached Ole Miss and he was bad!
How time have changed for the better when LSU hired him to be their next head coach and boom LSU have been great!

Because Joe Dean, the genius that he is, took the recommendations of Bill Arnsparger (who was now Florida's new AD) on the hiring of his replacement.

Let's see how that would work; imagine you're an Alabama fan. Nick Saban leaves to go be the AD at, say, Auburn. Do you take Nick's suggestion on who the next Bama coach should be?

Saban suggested Houston Nutt as his replacement at LSU

Frickin Arnsparger left us to become AD at Florida. Spurrier was at Duke at the time and wanted the LSU job, but Arnsparger recommended Mike Archer for the job. Bill then went to Florida and hired Spurrier shortly thereafter. Florida got Fun and Gun, while we went through some very dark years.

Curley was a gump at heart.

He rode the coattail of Favre at SMiss.

What did that tell you about ADs when they were planning on leaving one school and they hired someone out of left field and then he takes off and hired someone better! It happened to Mizzou!

No...
LSU only had the one national title from the 50's (just like Auburn), but was consistently a Top 20 ranked team and in bowls, when that meant something. Won the SEC a couple times a decade from the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's.

The 90's was due to coaching and recruiting- there's a big list of great Louisiana college players in the 90's. Problem is, they played at Florida State, Nebraska, Miami etc.
LSU fixed that, the program revived, and those other programs tailed off.

Spurrier was just out of the USFL actually. Bowden was also a potential as LSU was a big-time program in the mid-80’s.
We didn’t have a private fundraising arm, we didn’t have a logo, it all really seemed small-time. New Orleans players went to FSU and ND or Michigan. We waited years to fire coaches who were awful right out of the gate I guess to be polite

It's because saving money was more important to Joe Dean than hiring the best available football coach.
