It seems like Archer was in over his head and couldn't recruit. Hallman was an awful coach by all accounts but at least he recruited pretty well. DiNardo turned things around, but made some awful assistant hires and was too much of a nice guy I think, lots of off the field issues

To this day I can't stand Brett Favre bc he made Curly Hallman (aka the worst D1 coach in history) look like an acceptable candidate. He went 23-11 at Southern Miss riding the arm of Brett Favre beating teams like Florida St and, most importantly to LSU at the time, Alabama (something LSU wasn't doing at the time). He was the worst. The kicker and this will just make you laugh...Southern Miss came to Death Valley Hallman's last season and beat us. He was fired 2 days later.

Spurrier was just out of the USFL actually.

Ah, that’s right. He ended up going to Duke when we didn’t give him the light of day. Thanks for the reminder.

Spurrier did receive consideration, but he was kind of an unknown quantity at that point. Seems that Archer was for LSU what Coker was for Miami; make an easy, lazy hire from within to keep things going and it just doesn't work

If hired Spurrier would have turned LSU around but would have eventually left for Florida where he played.

"So bad" doesn't even begin to cover it. Abysmal is more like it. Especially after being so hard-nosed and winning two conference championships in the 80's. There is no way to demonstrate how bad Curly Hallman actually was. No matter what you think, he was worse than that.

Too many other power 5 teams in their state they had to recruit against

That aggy dominance allowed these schools to be better than them:

Tcu
Baylor
Texas Tech

You’re on par with Houston but proudly ahead of rice and smu.

‘Grats on your in state domination.

DiNardo was a big upgrade over Mike Archer and Curly Hallman

Yep

95-97 was a nice 3 years. He replaced good assistants with terrible hires and the 98 team was just kinda snakebit with injuries.

Imagine an 8-3 SEC team going to the Independence Bowl these days It wasn't a disappointment for us back then though

traditionally strong program

They weren't strong in the 80's either. They won the SEC once, tied once. Went to a bowl game like 6 times and only won 1.

The 70's? Well, they managed to win the SEC once, and managed to win 2 bowl games out of 7.

60's a little better, but still only 1 ever SEC championship. Did win a bunch of bowl games and had winning seasons.

That's a history of mediocrity.

LSU was an easy win most years when I was growing up, and a loss usually meant it was a bad year for Alabama as a whole. Usually a radio game.

Making a bowl game of any kind was an accomplishment back in the day due to limited bowl games.

Now not so much.

coming off a top 5 finish, we turned the keys over to Mike Archer, curley, then DiNardo, all mistakes....terrible...did not recover until saban

This. And as much as we love to hate Saban, he turned it around for us.

I was in college from 92-96. We were so bad, with a few high points here and there.

Twas before my time, but LSU's run from 1958-73 was one of the best in the country even if we didn't win many bowl games. Remember we were playing Mississippi (who was a juggernaut at the time) every year.

LSU was a baseball school in the 90s

I wonder if we're the only traditional football school that's ever been a baseball school at any point Basketball was good in the early 90s, but I'm too young to remember that, only the probation-crippled Brady years

1998, 1999 were very good teams that were very injury riddled
