A lot of plays are just option routes for him on a LB where he can go any direction.
I mentioned this awhile back but I have some good friends that are connected via coaching with Chip Lindsey. Supposedly Gus doesn't believe in option routes
When they explained it to me, there is some logic to the argument. So first, there are 3 basic posits that seem reasoanble
#1 Every defensive playcall / coverage has weaknesses
#2 If you know the defensive play call & coverage, the offensive play caller can call a play to exploit the weakness
#3 Off Playcallers can identify D playcalls through extensive game preparation, film study and analysis of opponent tendencies
Based on the above 3 assumptions, there is no reason to call an 'option route.' If you know the defense, you know the 'correct option' so why not just call that route?
This thinking isn't uncommon amongst many good offensive coaches. Baylor WR under Art Briles used to acknowledge they took plays off as a fatigue strategy as they knew their route wasn't being thrown

That strategy would still require a dominant offensive line, no? The offensive line would be involved in each of those lines of thinking, regardless of the defensive setup.

I thought this was obvious.
It is obvious to some

I’m not talking about LSU specifically, just burrow and nix and how comparable their stats are as first year starters. Burrow is a whole different qb than he was last year and it’s not just the different scheme.

No strategy works if you can't block anyone but not sure you need a 'dominant' one.
As an expert armchair QB, my criticism is that this leads to Gus' favorite way to mitigate OL failures, max protect w RB/HBack instead of running routes. If you say know Seth Williams's post route will be open, all you need is time which max protect can help with.
I personally would prefer for the RB becoming a check down option + HB running a route that stretches the D. If the defense blitzes, RB is the safety route while if they pressure with3- 4 and drop 7-8 in coverage on 3 routes we probably aren't completing a deep pass anyways

Ohio St’s season just ended on an option route.

Idk if that’s an option route or if he just went rogue. That was a weird play.

Ya, option routes can lead to INT
Was that really an option route? Looked like he may have thought Fields scrambling left and changed route to not run himself out of the play

But you have to know the defenses. DCs also study offensive tendencies and mask the defense. Hence option routes

I get the general premise of the three points, especially for WRs. I just know how difficult it is for a LB to have a RB in man coverage out of the backfield. You can very easily get caught leaning one way or flat footed.
Obviously you can’t do this on every play with a releasing RB, otherwise you’d have multiple receivers in the same areas and potentially bring a defender into a passing lane.

Their WRs are freaks too. They can go 4 wide with guys that are just physical monsters that can win 1 on 1 vs anybody, and then the RB Clyde Edwards Helaire is a good pass catcher too and has also been playing out of his mind

I feel similarly.
So the other interesting point to add in is how this is affected Malzahns well reported belief on execution that is basically 'better to do a few plays great than a lot of plays good'
From what I was told, Gus won't run a play unless he believes the O can perfectly execute it. As in, Gus won't run a passing concept like mesh out of new formations or with different personnel groups without extensive practice (Not really in season possible). This supposedly is why our player subs + formations sometimes tipoff defense

Brady 20%
Burrow 50%
Freak WRs 15%
O line 15%
The real key is any 3 of 4 of these together and LSU still has losses. But 4 together and they're playing some pretty damn good ball.
I read that a coach (maybe Brady) challenged Burrow to throw 10,000 passes to his WR in the off season and he did.
Burrow is special, has a unique drive and the physical abilities. You get that drive, skill set coupled with a O line that is decent and 3 first round WRs and that's it. Brady brought the concepts that everyone in the nation saw LSU had been lacking for years. I don't know if the guy is a genius or not, because everyone saw the pathetic LSU offense for years and knew it had to change. I'm certain many folks were capable if given the keys by coach O.

question is how do we transform Bo into Burrow?
Start with keeping Malzahn away from him.
Far. Far Away.

Burrow didn’t have accuracy issues last season like Nix this season.
He’s also being protected by a good offensive line. He’s also throwing to multiple NFL-starter-caliber receivers. He’s also complemented by a few stout running backs who consistently catch the ball and make people miss.
Oh, and his offensive scheme reflects one of the best offenses in the NFL.
This is a foolish thread and one that will lead to the typical frustrated Auburn fan. Morris might improve us but there’s no reason to believe we will have an NFL-style offense. Our offensive line is being completely replaced. Our receivers are decent but no where near the level LSU has.
Our hope is not to try and replicate LSU but rather to get back to what made Gus a good offensive coordinator: downhill running game and tempo.

The best thing you can do when these guys start this is just sit back and watch.
Its a fools errand to try to inject any kind of reason.

Our receivers can improve. LSU receivers were nothing like they were this year, but Brady put in some drills for them in off season and the results speak for themselves. However, the rest of your post is pretty accurate.
If anyone is hoping for Nix to have a major turnaround and improvement on the level of Burrow is delusional.
OL is a huge component to all of this as you pointed out, and I have big doubts we improve even a little bit. I am expecting a step back on that actually.
15-0 Ship!

For comparison
Boobie, DJ, Kam accounted for 6% of Auburn recptions (14 / 212)
LSU top 3 RB Rushers accounted for 19.3% of LSU receptions before semifinal (66/342)
That's amazing the difference. Add in how many throws Burrows threw to the TE vs Auburn QBs/TEs, then that adds even more.
Interesting note, LSU only avg'd 5+ on those 66 RB catches, and we avg'd over 14 on far lesser throws.
I do believe and hope that Morris will be able to convince Malzahn, his passing tendencies need more complexity and wider variety such as RBs and TEs to at least make the defense defend all offensive players.
It will also be critical to Nix's progression as a QB if his aspirations are to play in the NFL. He'll be another middle to late rounder if Gus doesn't improve his passing offense w/ Nix. And that will be a shame.

They had almost the same completion percentage. Burrow has made leaps and bounds in his accuracy this year.
