This isn’t to knock recruiting rankings, which are clearly pretty accurate, but it’s specifically to address how overhyped “5 stars” are.
All we ever hear about is how Alabama is loaded with 5 stars, when in reality we sign like 3 per year, and usually 1 or 2 don’t pan out.

The real meat of any elite team is 4 star recruits.
Waddle, Ruggs, Devonta Smith, Amari Cooper, Jalen Hurts, etc the list goes on

There’s really not much of a difference between 4 and 5 star recruits, except when you’re talking about an obvious star like a RB, WR, or sometimes QB.

The problem is these recruiting sites weigh 5 star recruits about 90% more than 4 stars when they give their team rankings, which is completely absurd. That’s almost saying that 5 stars are worth 2 4 stars. Ridiculous. Yet, that’s how we arrive at these rankings.

In summation, feel proud of your 4 star recruits. I’m looking at you, Florida. Count them as pretty much the same as 5 stars, and you’ll get more accurate team rankings (with Alabama way out in front)

Pretty sure 247s ranking system is, on the whole, a good snapshot of recruits ability to be drafted highly

That being said, yalls WR 2017 haul will never be duplicated

I do feel like the recruiting services have watered down the impact of a 5th star. It should mean a nearly guaranteed impact starter as a freshman, but that’s definitely not the case any more.

I thought Tua was a 5 star. Wasn’t he the highest rated qb out of hs? Don’t feel like looking it up...

Sorry for partying, but we don't cheat anymore. 4 Stars is as good as it gets for us. Maybe someday we can get a coach as personable as Saban.

I often wonder about the 4 vs 5 star designations. I think you said it correctly with your summation.

A Cam, Julio, Gurley, Brown etc are what we all hope that our 5 star recruits end up being. Truth is our 5 stars today may fail and 4 stars may be our all stars.

Get your average as high as possible in stars and you will be playing for a playoff. I do feel a good coach can bring up 4 stars to championship level.

5-stars become NFL players, All-Americans, etc as an astronomically higher rate than 4-stars or 3-stars do. Teams that finish with the most 4/5 stars almost always are the same teams that go to the playoffs and finish in the Top 10.

It doesn't guarantee success, but it makes it a WHOLE lot more likely.

Yes 5 stars is just hype mostly in a lot of sports imo.

No team uses star designations, it’s a shallow construct made for fans

Star designations are heavily influenced by who has offered the player

When you get past the top 300 prospects or so, it becomes way more about program fit than anything else.
