The 4 Seed has won it 2 out of 5 times..
the 2 seed 3 times... the #1 seed never... and the Lower seed has won the title game every time

If all the conferences had at least 2-3 top tier programs you'd see a lot more variety in the playoff teams.
But you see it's not just timing and the fact that all the conferences don't have other competitive teams is no accident. We're seeing the pareto distribution in full effect. It will not get any better and it fact will get worse. The concentration of talent will continue to be localized to a few select teams BECAUSE of the 4 team playoff. They need to kill it or expand immediately before the kill the golden goose. The country is bored of OSU, Bama, Clemson, OU and one or two others having the only shots.

Hot take incoming, but I think they should go back to the pre-BCS bowl system.
College football is quirky. Embrace the quirk.
ETA: Reasoning: when the system is designed with the singular goal of determining a national champion, you kill national interest. That’s only a semi-realistic goal for about 15 programs.

That argument was fine until the regular seasons started sucking arse...It either needs to go back to 2 or expand

I preferred the BCS top 2 system, TBH
So did I. College Football is 99% regional. The top teams should win their conference and be rewarded with a good bowl matchup.
You expand to 8 teams and the talking heads will cry for 16... hell, why not 64 teams? that's how it's settled in basketball, yeah?
Football hurts. At the end of a season, most of the players are pretty banged up. An 8 team playoff would require three additional games, which is a quarter of the games played during the regular season. Ridiculous is asking uncompensated players play to 16 games a season.... Three games against the best teams in FBS.
These are young men. Most will never have a career in the NFL but almost all will leave the game with some nagging injury. I say enjoy the football season. Enjoy the conference rivalries. Talk shite on message internet message boards.
Forget about trying to end the season with some certainty that about the #1 college football team in the country. We all know this year the #1 team is LSU but I still think we should have to play the conference championship game to settle the record.

College football has the best regular season in sports, and I never want to see that change.
It really doesn't. A one loss OU can still be in the playoff picture while a team like Baylor can be undefeated and there are talks of them being potentially left out.
Some of us are not in love with that part of college football

Tbh I’ve been an advocate for expansion until this season. Yes as an LSU fan that probably affected my thoughts some but it’s been one helluva season. So many big games across the country that just wouldn’t be that big if not for only 4 spots. If they do it needs to be 6 max imo. 5conf champs and a wildcard. I truly believe that conf championships must stay relevant

Someone said it best the other day, the playoffs job is do get the two best teams, to insure this, they allow a 100% margin of error.

Wiscy won the Big 10 a few years ago with 5 losses
That was a very weird year not likely to happen very often. Wisconsin was in third place in their division that year but only made the championship game because both Ohio State and Penn State were barred from competing in the post season.
Besides, in a playoff with with 5 P5 champs, 1 Go5, and 2 at large bids, it would be easy to make a requirement that only champions with less than 3 losses get the auto bid. It becomes an extra at large bid if a champ doesn't qualify.

You guys are being blinded to the forest because of the trees.
The CFP is about money. Nothing will change until the current CFP TV contract expires. When the TV contract expires, it is going to expand. More teams = More money. I doubt it expands more than 8. But expansion is inevitable. It doesn't matter how much you or I like it or hate it... it is coming.

College football is still such that losing 1 regular season game puts you in danger of possibly missing the playoffs and 2 losses 100% ends you.
This is unequivocally untrue.
In 2017 Auburn had 2 losses and was still a top 4 team at the start of the SEC Championship. Had they won that game, there isn't a snowballs chance in hell they don't get into the CFP as a 2 loss team.
