I get that he passed at 21-19 because of the false start, but at 21-26 with seconds to go, there's no real difference between a 5 or 6 pt lead.

I was wondering the same. Auburn got an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after the touchdown. Maybe if they'd gone for 2, they would have had to try from the 18?

Yes there is. At 5 a touchdown beats you. At 6 a touchdown AND and extra point beats you.

True, but which is more likely?

You get an 8 yard play for two, or the other team misses an extra point kick?

I agree, I was just pointing out the difference.

So Gus thought it would be better to go for 1 so they could block an extra point that is statistically very low? That thinking, Oregon could have blocked their extra point. Gus screwed up, plain and simple.

Why did he pull a less Miles and throw to the endzone when a Field Goal would have won it?

I agree. The only thing I can think is that if disaster happened and returned the ball for two points during the conversion then it is 26-23.

The really dumb play was the WR spiking the ball. That gave Oregon a chance to win the game.
Just give the ball to the official like Walter Payton used to do and then celebrate.

But yes go for two there.

Yeah it was stupid. Only thing I can see is momentum was at an all time high and he didn’t want to risk losing it with a 2 pt try that probably would have failed considering the emotions of the players.

Even that is weak. Should have gone for two.

I disagree, but that’s ok.

It was not very intelligent to not go for two.

As Les said “ still had plenty of time left on the clock after the play”

Only Gus had 9 seconds left and Les had 1

It's on one of the replay angles. I saw it. He spiked it.

It was a mistake. The only reason you could claim as a reason was they already had a 15 yard penalty assessed on the Kickoff, if they run another regular play, they could get an additional penalty. That is not why he didn't try it.

It was. Ref really wanted to inject himself into the game. Let the kid celebrate a little. It wasn't even a dramatic spike.

Technically the ref had every right to flag him, but it was completely unnecessary.

Didn’t see the spike I thought the penalty was when the player took off his helmet.

Oregon nearly running back the kickoff and getting that great position almost fricked Gus in the butt.

He should have gone for two.

It was a mistake. He knows it. Glad it did not hurt us. Hope he learned from it

Because a defensive return brings it to 3 pts. It's not that hard to understand really.
