Still no separation between Justin Fields, Gunnar Hoak in Ohio State’s QB battle
Justin Fields was supposed to walk in to Columbus and win the starting job. Nobody has once thought the former five-star prospect would have a challenger to be under center when Ohio State takes the field against Florida Atlantic in Week 1.
Fields, however, seems to have a pretty strong challenger in Kentucky transfer Gunnar Hoak. So far, neither guy has separated himself in fall camp.
At least that’s what head coach Ryan Day is saying.
Saturday, Day met with the media to talk about the early stages of fall camp. Of course, one of the topics of conversation was the battle between Fields and Hoak at the quarterback position.
“I thought after today I’d have a better feel. I didn’t,” Day said, according to Dan Hope of Eleven Warriors. “Nobody went out there and won the job, for sure.”
There’s still plenty of time for one guy to separate himself, but it sounds like there’s a real battle in Columbus.
Maybe that’s not completely surprising considering both players are learning a new system and have limited game experience. Still, Fields not being the clear starter at this point probably isn’t the kind of news most expected out of Ohio State.
It’ll be interesting to see how long Day goes before pulling the trigger on one of these guys.

You've lost your mind if you don't think fields is 100% starting

Coach is probably trying to use media to light a fire under Fields arse. Clearly his attitude hasn’t changed at OSU

Smart never named Fromm starter last year before game 1.
Not saying this is a nothing burger, just saying it means nothing at this point.

Or keep the challenger engaged and working hard.
It's hard to tell, but it sounds like coachspeak.

Why are we still posting and discussing Fields?

Read: keep them out of the transfer portal...

Same was said about Kyler Murray last year. Yawn.

That and get them ready in case. Fields may be running a good bit and that will always spell increased chance of getting injured.
But yes, keep them out of the portal until the season is well underway.

Fields isn't very experienced relative to the top college QBs. Trevor Lawrence had 67 HS starts, Fromm has 51 HS starts and Fields had 17 HS starts. I feel confident that Fields wins the job but stranger things have happened.

That also had a lot to do with Kirby's strategy on handling entitled premadonnas and their family members though. Which is to basically coddle them and kiss their arse all to the detriment of the team.
Fromm deserved so much better than how the QB position was handled last year.
Can't help but wonder what last year might have been like if Fields had never been there.

Eason isn't exactly lighting it up so far out in Washington either.
Sounds like another Jake has won over the team and is giving him a run for the starting job. Jake Haener this time.
Frommward..

Ohio State is going to have a tougher time than their fans want to admit replacing Haskins and Urban this season.

Thank you Dawgsgirl.
I'm not one to burn bridges, but this is yesterdays news. I've never said anything about Fields. He competed, he transferred and I hope the best for the guy.
An aside, my father, my aunts, my uncles, my cousins held grudges for decades.
It's fricked up and a waste of time.

For people that don’t want to talk about Fields, why are you clicking a thread about Fields then?
To most, the fact that our current QB sent two of his competitors packing and that they will both most likely start for top 12 programs this year is an epic and exciting storyline. One that will be fun as hell to monitor all season long.
Thats not “holding a grudge”. Its called being a football fan.

Jefferson, you are good. You changed the argument.
My curiosity is why?
