By mid-year, Saban may decide it's going to take something special at QB to give Alabama the best chance to best these teams in the playoff.

We have seen this before in 2017. Saban didn't put Tua in until he was about to lose the natty. Saban and Bama were extremely lucky to make the playoffs after losing to Auburn in the season finale.

Fast forward a year and Dabo benched his senior QB after 4 games and went with the stud QB and won a natty.

Don't look for Saban to make a change unless he is forced too.

Jones isn't the returning SEC offensive player of the year that took Alabama to the national title game last year. In fact, though Jones looked pretty good when his number was called (cliche enough for you?), he also threw 2 interceptions that were returned for touchdowns (but I won't call em pick 6) to lose the Auburn game. Yes, I do remember that we also lost with Hurts, and the next game he was replaced at the half.

My guess is that Young will get a lot of playing time this year, and not just mop up duty, and I think Saban won't be so hesitant to let him start and finish the game.

Yes, coach Saban has seen this before. This is obviously going to be news to some Bama fans but Mac Jones ain't Jalen Hurts. He's not the next SEC offensive player of the year, which Jalen achieved as a freshman. That was hard to sit a QB coming off an MVP and showed such great composure under pressure even with a Tua sitting in the wings. Jalen was good enough that 3 QBs transferred during his freshman campaign.

Mac has earned the right to be the starter against Missouri. But he hasn’t earned the right to start the whole year. If Young progresses through the season and becomes the best option for us, Saban has the responsibility to bench Mac and play Young.

We all remember how badly Jalen struggled as a passer in 2017. Tua saved the natty and the truth is, that change likely should have happened in October or November. I think we win the Iron Bowl that year with Tua slinging it to those receivers. I hope Saban learned a valuable lesson from that year and will play the best QB when he’s ready, whether that’s this year or next for Young. That said, I hope Mac kills it this year and wins the Heisman.

The Jalen Milroe/Tuli Tagovailoa QB controversy of 2024 is going to be brutal .

Remember Blake Barnett? Kid did well only to suck in the game. Not saying it'll happen to Bryce... but we don't want him to end up like Bo Nix... hurt his confidence.

How many games did Barnett get playing time? I can only remember like one game.

That's all he needed...

The point is .... Kid could be great on the field. He just need time to get ajusted to the speed of the game and SEC defenses coming at him.

3 games. He didn't get in the Ole Miss game and frankly, that comeback by Jalen probably ran him out of town. And that loophole he found that allowed him to go junior college and start somewhere else the next season.

I don't think there is a scheme that can counter it. You just need a flat out dominant defensive front that is able to shut down the dive play on the RPO without stacking the box so you can force enough obvious passing downs to stall enough drives to win the game.

Given that the sole aim of a HUNH team is to fatigue and confuse the defense the best solution is numbers. Saban's recruiting strategy is his best concept on how to control the advantage the offense has.

I think some rules need to be implemented for harsher penalties against the offense.

Let’s start with chop blocks. This should be equal to targeting. Any block level or below the knee should be reviewed. If guilty... ejected. Set out the next game.

We’ve all seen this and there’s probably no greater fear to a DL or LB then to be chopped blocked. Devastating to a career.

Hands to the face. 15yd penalty and a loss of down. These two would help level the playing field a little

Shoot, I'd be happy if they'd just call the penalties that are already on the books. I posted the graphic a week or so ago that showed how rarely Alabama's opponents were called for offensive holding against us over a four-year period (I think 2014-17). We weren't just an outlier; the graph had to be made larger to accommodate our data point, because it was so far outside the rest of the stats.

Not if they call them like the NFL did last year. So many times a player gets called hands to the face and their hands were not on the opposing player’s face. It was maybe near the neck area but not on the neck either. You wouldn’t think it would be so hard but it was hard for them to distinguish it in short amount of time and given certain angles.

Either that or it was intentional. Definitely lost the Lions their first game with the Packers with 2 hands to face penalties that definitely weren’t correct.

No, the biggest thing that would level the playing field and it's been discussed ad nauseum is to adopt the NFL OL downfield rule. They can go downfield ONE yard on pass plays. Beyond that, it's a penalty. Part two of that is ENFORCE it! Gus and people like him can bitch all they want but the defense is playing with one hand tied behind their back if they can't read run or pass based on blocking technique. A guy blocking you 3 yards (and beyond because it's not called) downfield on a pass play is just unfair.

Totally agree. I can’t remember, but is that a reviewable play? If not it should be.

Jones doesnt take one look, start running to the right, and throw the ball into the stands. He also had the second highest QBR behind the lsu QB, in the games he started.
Last year before the season when Saban said Jones was the number 2 QB behind Tua, "and its not even close", that should have been a clue about what the coaches thought about Jones.

But I don't see anyone stopping super teams from being recruited and accounted for. Alabama is one of a handful of programs in America that can just out talent the opposition. Try leveling that playing field. It's almost gotten comical watching the same suspects in the playoffs these last 6 years.
