Anyone have any thoughts on the Memphis game? Can’t decide if I’m going

I don’t wanna drive 6 hours just to watch us get boatraced by Tiger High.
Memphis can score a ton, but their defense is bad (probably not as bad as our defense though).
They return their QB, who passed for nearly 3300 yards with a 26:9 TD:INT ratio. They also return their top four pass catchers. They lose their 1900 yard rusher to the NFL, but return a senior RB who catches the ball or of the backfield very well.

I am very skeptical about this season but I think we win this game.

First four are huge and this is the biggest.

I’ll be sitting in the A/C comfortable and more importantly safe instead of chilling in Orange mound for the afternoon

I think it should be a fun high scoring game. Granted I have no idea who will win, but I think it will be entertaining.

I'll probably go since I'm in Oxford and am only an hour away, but if I can't get a good group to come with me I may just stay at home.
I am conflicted on this game. I hope we win and think we have a good shot, but am not holding my breath. Memphis is a good team with a great offense and an experienced defense. With us having new systems and young faces on both sides of the ball, facing a veteran Memphis team on the road to open the season doesn't seem ideal.

I said all off-season that we will get hammered by Memphis, but I think now that we win this game and it may not be close.
That being said, I would not drive 6 hours to sit in the pit of Hell heat that is known as an 11am game in the Liberty Bowl in August.
The forecast, so far, is a mostly sunny day of 88 degrees so it may turn out nice.

That also could be to our benefit. Memphis won't know what to expect. Luke knows whats on the line. I don't expect us to be flat like the last time we played them.

I am planning on going as of now. It's gonna be a steamer in the Liberty Bowl.

I've been to the liberty bowl twice saw Memphis beat us in 2015? and then saw them beat UCLA a couple of years ago, I'll be staying home this time since apparently I'm bad luck for opposing teams
I'm not particularly high on Matt Luke and I expect him to have a bad year this year but I honestly kinda think they'll win this game, I think if Luke doesn't win this though he's pretty much dead in the water.

I don’t think a loss to Memphis causes Luke to lose his job. It will be chalked up to “working out kinks” and the new coaching system. I think a .500 season saves Luke’s job, as much as that would frustrate me. 5-7 or worse he should get the boot.

I’m sorry but 4-8 he keeps his job.

I planned to go but I am moving from Memphis to the coast this weekend so I don’t see it happening

Dores I think it’s a matter of romanticizing the past with Freeze.
I tend to enjoy reading what y’all have to say more than I give my input, but I’ll say it, and there’s no doubt about it, we had a fricking energy that teams were put in check by when Freeze was at the helm. Real talk. Our defense hit hard. I once saw Mike Hilton tackle a guy in the dick and push him back 3-5 yards behind the line of scrimmage. I think it was against Miss St. Freeze knew how to tap into something deeper with these players. Hilton was a 3-Star. He bought in. They gang tackled and utilized speed to their advantage in Freeze’s first year, then became physical and on the same playing field with any other SEC team. When we went into a game we could at least feel confident we were going to compete or win.
If we get beat by Alabama by +50 again, Luke needs gone. Even when Freeze’s roster wasn’t decked out, we competed with Alabama in his first year at the helm. I have yet to see that emotion and thunder from our players under Luke. I’m sorry, but 62-7 or whatever it was against a team that had AJ Brown, DK Metcalf, and DeMarkus Lodge on the same roster?? It was pathetic. I don’t want to hear “Yeah but it’s Alabama.” Freeze proved a lot of that mindset is settling for less. He damn near took down the consistently best team in the country 3 years in a row. Anyone who thinks that guy was a setback for this program is out of their damn mind. It’s clear there was a lot of pettyness to the NCAA investigation and epitomizes politics on that level. I still don’t really know or remember what we did wrong? Something about a utility bill. Meanwhile you’ve got multi-hundred thousand dollar implications at other universities that are being met with indifference.
Freeze was good for this program, made some stupid choices, and that was that. I really hope Luke gets his moment this year with OM, but I’ve yet to see what these players are so big on him for translate to the field. We’ve had a couple decent wins under his helm. But letting Arkansas come back from being down by 28 when the game was in hand? shite, I was at that game and went to Ajax to get a last meal in before I left town because the game was a beatdown, only to see on the TV we had lost the lead in the time it took me to walk from the Vaught to Ajax.
TLDR: I want to see Luke kill it this year, but I don’t fault fans who are skeptical and have a sour taste in their mouth. But you’re right, we should support them regardless. I agree with you there.

Luke has divided the fanbase worse than anyone I can remember. He is toxic for the program.

Could be that your sample size is just too small. I along with most all those I know who are Ole Miss fans are at least optimistic and ready to get and/or stay behind our team. I just don't see what you speak of.
