Someone posted a link to the NCAA football record book in the thread arguing over NCs, and I thought I'd share a few of the more outlandish records that I came across for your edification. Some are SEC-related, some are not.

Most Passes Had Intercepted, Game

9—John Reaves, Florida vs. Auburn, Nov. 1, 1969 (attempted 66)

How did this dude not get benched?

Fewest Rushing Yards Gained, Game

Minus 109—Northern Ill. vs. Toledo, Nov. 11, 1967 (33 rushes)

If there's one thing everyone knows, it's that you can't run on the fearsome Toledo defense.

Fewest Passing Yards Gained, Both Teams, Game

Minus 13—North Carolina (-7 on 1 of 3 attempts) & Penn (-6 on 2 of 12 attempts), Nov. 13, 1943

Quite the barnburner!

Fewest Plays, Both Teams

33—Texas Tech (12) & Centenary (LA) (21), Nov. 11, 1939 (28 rushes, 5 passes, 30 yards)

33 total plays for an entire game? How is that even poss-

Most Punts, Game

36—Charlie Calhoun, Texas Tech vs. Centenary (LA), Nov. 11, 1939 (1,318 yards; 20 were returned, 8 went out of bounds, 6 were downed, 1 was blocked (blocked kicks counted against the punter until 1955) and 1 went into the end zone for a touchback. Thirty-three of the punts occurred on first down during a heavy downpour in the game played at Shreveport, LA.)

Oh, ok. Gotcha. Apparently the NCAA doesn't count punts as plays for the purpose of the record books. This game must have been a true sight to behold.

Most Fumbles, Both Teams, Game

27—Wichita St. (17) & Florida St. (10), Sept. 20, 1969 (lost 17)

Most Turnovers Lost, Game

13—Georgia vs. Georgia Tech, Dec. 1, 1951 (5 fumbles, 8 interceptions)

Good god, UGA.

Most Fumbles, Season

73—Cal St. Fullerton, 1992 (lost 41)

I'm trying to wrap my mind around that number, but it is difficult.

Most Penalties, Both Teams, Game

36—San Jose St. (24) & Fresno St. (12), Oct. 4, 1986 (317 yards)

Steve Shaw and the REC clearly involved.

Most Consecutive Games Without Defeat

64—Washington, 1907-17 (4 ties)
(since 1937) 48—Oklahoma, 1953-57 (1 tie)

I knew about the Oklahoma streak, but I'd never heard of the Washington one. That's damn impressive.

You know, sometimes I wonder if the NCAA just makes up some pre-1950s shite just to make us wonder how it would be possible.

John Reaves to Carlos Alvarez was quite the combo.

Hell, we only lost that game by 42 (48-6) to a team that finished ranked #5 (and was probably a little better than that... no losses but a tie to Duke)... I call that a damn miracle.

Incredible. Would be awesome to see pictures even (assuming no film coverage from that far back).

Unfortunately no, at least not in the source I used, which was just a PDF listing the all-time records. I don't know if the NCAA's website might allow you to do something like that.

"viewed by less than 1,000 spectators, the smallest crowd to witness a game by the Gents since they started playing big time football."

quote:

The game had 77 punts. You read that correctly — 77 punts. In fact, during one stretch during the third and fourth quarters, the two teams punted on 22 consecutive plays (all first downs). Why? They were hoping for a fumble because the weather and field conditions were so bad. Fumbles were plentiful — there were 14 of them — but only six were lost and, of course, none led to a score.

Accounts of the game refer to the game being played in a driving rain, leaving the field muddy and the ball slippery. Because of that, records for futility were set.

Texas Tech punted 39 times and ran just 12 offensive plays for minus-1 yard.

Thirteen records still stand in the NCAA record books:

— Most punts combined both teams: 77 (42 were returned, 19 went out of bounds, 10 were downed, four were blocked, one went for a touchback and another was fair caught; 67 came on first down)

— Most punts by a team: 39, Texas Tech

— Fewest offensive plays: 12, Texas Tech (10 rushes, two passes for a total of minus-1 yard)

— Fewest plays allowed: 12, Centenary

— Fewest yards gained most plays: 30

— Fewest rushing attempts, both teams: 28

— Most punt returns: 22, Texas Tech (for 112 yards)

— Most punt returns, both teams: 42

— Most individual punts: 36, Charlie Calhoun, Texas Tech, for 1,318 yards (36.6 average)

— Punt yardage: 1,318 yards, Calhoun

— Punt returns (and total kick returns): 20, Milton Hill, Texas Tech, 110 yards

No word on how many attended the game in Shreveport, La. Texas Tech finished the season 5-5-1 and Centenary 2-9-1.

That’s great, but after interception number 6 or 7, you’d think the coach would have pulled him aside and said, “I love you, John, but I think you might not have it today.”

Where’s Mizzou in this shite show of football? There has to be some embarrassing contributions from MO or the records are bogus.

John Reaves set the NCAA career passing yardage in 1971 courtesy of the infamous Gator Flop. It couldn't have happened against a better team (Miami).

There were pages and pages of records. These are only a few that jumped out at me. I’m sure Missou is in there somewhere. Maybe under “only team to lose on an illegal fifth down” or something like that.

That reporter at the end was the original "hot take artist". The sport of football should be deemphasized because a coach wanted to give his quarterback a chance to set a record when the game is already over? What a baby.
