No, its not. Which is the entire point.
As a fan, which would you rather have: 14 straight appearances in the Top Five with two national championships, or 11 straight appearances in the Top 10 with five national championships?

Yes, but they still managed to play a very tough schedule each year mostly due to playing a difficult OOC slate
After they joined the ACC, their only tough OOC opponents (aside from the annual rivalry games between Miami and Florida), was #2 Notre Dame in 1993 and #14 Texas A&M in 1998. And starting in 1993, Miami started to fall off the map until the turn of the century - so their only remaining yearly OOC opponent with a pulse was Florida.

At that point in time, the ACC was a joke of a conference. They lost a grand total of two conference games in the 1990s.
In their defense, they did play Florida and Miami every year.

They had been playing Miami every year since the early-60s and Florida every year since the late-50s. It's not like they began those rivalries in the late-80s/early-90s to increase their strength of schedule.

No way. The way you FINISH is far more impressive than being ranked highly at some point during the season when it wasn't deserved
You post this, but think that finishing 1st 5 times is less impressive than being consistently a runner up?
Someone has an axe to grind, it seems.

You can shove your congrats Alabama direct up your smelly farthole.

Yes seriously, Alabama's run is the best in history because it's a 10 year streak of excellence with 5 national titles and 4-5 "almosts" which is insane.

Their streak was from 87-00 so they played Jimmy Johnson and Dennis Erickson's Miami teams and Spurrier's Florida teams. Both were generally among the 5 best teams in America during various parts of FSU's streak

I must admit, Alabama’s current streak is nothing short of amazing. Got to give credit when it’s due.
I was around for the Miami glory days between 1983-2003 when we finished in the top ten 14 of those 20 years and had a 20 year record of 212-42 (5 rough years cost us most of those 42 losses)
Unfortunately those days have been gone a while. I think Richt is a classy guy but I’m not sure he has the conviction or edge to win a title at Miami. If we get lucky with a very talented roster it’s a possibility. I hope I’m wrong. This season will tell us a lot.
I’d like to remain in the top ten and not be considered overrated...
Good luck all

And how many times would FSU have played for a national title if we had the BCS or CFP?
They still played in 5 title games during that span. The difference is Saban has won most of his whereas Bowden went 2-4.

With a few aberrations here and there,
good points made by all. Enjoyed the
discussion---but I lean this way:

I will take 5 National Championships in 10 yrs over top 4 finishes for 14 straight years with 2 Titles. Easy choice.

And 3 titles in 13 seasons over 2 in 14 too.

Saban is 6-1 in national championship games (counting his LSU one).
He's also 7-1 in SEC championship games.
13-2 in championship games is insane, considering your opponent in championship games is typically extremely good as well.

But for FSU to FINISH in the AP Top 4 in 14 consecutive seasons is a feat that in my opinion stands alone. Saban has mustered 4 consecutive Top 4 finishes..... if he does it the next 10 years straight, he'll have equaled it. That tells you all you need to know about how impressive that FSU streak was.
ACC bro. ACC.

Uh...not true at all. They also played for it in 1998 and 2000 as a one loss team. It was also the luck of the draw. More teams ran the table back then.
In 1987, Oklahoma and Miami finished the season undefeated.
In 1988, Notre Dame and West Virginia finished the regular season undefeated.
In 1992, Alabama and Miami finished the regular season undefeated.
In 1994, Nebraska and Penn State finished the regular season undefeated.
In 1997, Nebraska and Michigan finished the regular season undefeated
I was talking about before the BCS and yeah titles are based on luck which is why you can't compare. The voters look for any possible excuse to get Alanna to play for a title twice not even winning their freaking division

40s ND
40s Army
50s OU
80s Miami
90s Nebraska
Were greater runs featuring multiple undefeated seasons

It's impressive, but 5 national championships in 9 years trumps all else.
In three of the other four years they were playing their final regular season game or final playoff game controlling their own destiny.
Phenomenal run. Really never been anything like it.
Another one that is mind blowing. Haven't lost a game by more than two scores since Saban has been there.

Not as impressive. And neither was the Bahr in the 70's. Back then you could skip the next best team in your conference often. You also could end up not even playing no. 2 in the bowl due to conference alliances. Now, you will have to beat two top five teams to win the thing. Consider this, it's possible that for Alabama or Auburn to win it this year, they'll play four consecutive top 5 matchups, maybe needing to win all. Certainly needing to win 3 of the four. Auburn might not be a top 5 at the end.
I'll say this. If Auburn wins the national championship this year, they will have done it with maybe the most brutal schedule of any national champ in history.
Georgia would probably have to win all and they'd play

I upvoted a “choke Oklahoma” response because, in this instance, it’s not an insult. It’s merely true.
OU is 8-1 in Big XII title games. Equally impressive as Saban’s SEC title game record. BUT, 4 of those SECCG wins resulted in NC games won; overall record of 4-1. Including the CFP games as they are for championship opportunities, OU’s BCSNCG/CFP record is 1-5 (1-4) stemming from CCG results.
OU has had opportunity after opportunity to capitalize in similar fashion to Alabama, but didn’t. OU could have National titles in 2003, 2004, 2008, 2015, 2017 but to no avail. But that’s life. OU’s 11 XII titles in the last 18 years is still impressive, but several times the icing on the cake has been left off.
