I will never forget the 7OT game with Kentucky. An Arkansas cornerback wrapped up Lorenzen in space and he carried him 8 yards on his back.

I remember when UGA played against him once, we had a DE come thru completely unblocked and unloaded on Lorenzen.....but he just bounced off that big mo-fo and JL then either completed a pass for a first down or ran for a first down. Can't remember completely; getting old.

It usually took 2-3 to get him to the ground.

One of my favorite SEC players ever. The guy could flat out get it done.

For his size, he was amazing. Deceptively quick as a runner, hard to bring down, improvise on the fly, and a cannon for an arm, and highly accurate with his throws. Very unique, which makes him hard to forget.

If we only had a defense, UK would have been dangerous during his years.

Say what you want about Hal Mumme but he is a pretty good OC.

No, he hired great assistants under him like Leach, Franklin, Dykes and Holgorsen

There is a reason why he fizzled out

I used to say that if you could combine UK's offense with Vandy's defense during that era, you'd have an SEC champion.

Lorenzen was a freak of nature, and that isn't an insult. No one his size should be the that light on his feet, that accurate throwing the ball, or that good of an overall athlete. While it could be nerve wracking, it was always fun to watch the big fellow play.

I remember everyone laughing at Hal Mumme when he named him the starting QB. Most people said he was a pure OL because of his size, strength and athleticism. To be honest he probably would have been a great linemen. Regardless, nobody was laughing at Mumme when Lorenzen started showing off those skills at QB.

I hated playing KY the years he was there because it took 2 and 3 guys to bring him down. It's almost like he laughed when someone got a hand on him and said "You gonna need a lot more help."

Probably my favorite all time SEC QB.

Rare agreement between State and OM, he was fun to watch.

On a semi related note, wasn't he the QB in the premature celebration game vs LSU?

Yes, and he was celebrating as well. I was sitting my seat with a buddy and said "This isn't over yet". Then boom.

I don't remember who they were playing, but he hit a guy in the middle of his chest. The receiver didn't get his hands up in time. It sounded like a cannon going off.

Yes, it did. I was at the 2001 State-Kentucky game, and we were up 17-14. UK has the ball at midfield with about a minute left and Mario Haggan(future NFL linebacker) and two others are on him. Lorenzen swats them off like flies and completes a pass. State held on, but that was impressive.

There is a comment on the Twitter preview where someone said Lorenzen hit a guy in between the numbers so hard once that the ball bounced back 20 yards and was intercepted. Said he knew the WR and the guy had a nasty bruise in the middle of his chest that looked just like the compressed end of a football.
