The Duke of Wellington said about Napoleon at Waterloo, "They came at us in the same old way and we defeated them in the same old way." Definitely applies to LSU's game plan that night. Every time the 1/9 game comes up I think of the Iron Duke's quote.

Like all such stories by former players, it totally depends on who the player is & his playing time, or lack of same & how that affected his feelings about his head coach. I know a former LSU great, played & starred in the NFL for several yrs & he's been quoted numerous times as saying that the players that Saban put in the pros respected the shite out of him but could not stand him personally. At the same time, the team's other 85 players all came to hate him over 4 yrs.Those former players at half time Sat. totally disputed what the OP is saying as far as the players' feelings bout CLM. So I take all he says with a large grain of salt.

Of course it was more about the defense than the offense, but LSU made plays on offense when it counted most and Bama did not. Bama couldn't even sniff the end zone in overtime with the ball starting at the 25. In fact, LSU drove them backwards. LSU almost scored TDs twice and Ford stepped out of bounds on the way to cruising to the end zone on an option play in overtime. Bama never ran a play inside LSU's 15.

I hate Saban and Bama with a passion, but they would have skullfricked OSU. Bama's only loss was in The Game of the Century which was really a toss up with the team who completed the greatest regular season in college football history.

Why arbitrarily pick from the 2nd quarter onward? This is the same logic LSU fans use in comparing how elite their program is compared to others but always starting with the year 2000.

Aside from passing more on first down, Alabama's game plan wasn't all that different from the first game either. The biggest difference between those two games was the fact that we didn't commit as many self-induced mistakes once we got inside the 30-yard line.
In that first game, especially in the first half, there were multiple drives where Alabama pushed inside the 30-yard line. But penalties, poor play calling, and ill-time sacks/tackles for loss hurt us in the early going. This led to much longer field goal attempts.
In that second game, we stalled inside the 30 just like we did in the first game. The only difference, however, is that we didn't do anything self-inflicting to push us back.

Heading into that game, I really liked our chances. I felt we came out tight in the 9-6 game. I also thought LSU did too but not nearly as bad as Bama.
After our first offensive play in the rematch, I knew LSU was done. We moved two tight ends to the left before the snap. AJ rolls left and hits shelley. LSU's defense had NO idea what the frick was happening. Eric Reid was so faked out, he almost came out of his shoes.
Those two games were college football's version of the 2000's Ravens vs Steelers. Absolutely punishing defenses. I was in Bryant Denny of the first matchup. The hits sounded like car crashes.

It would be funny if Leslie went to Nebraska or somewhere and had their program in the Top 10 in a couple of years. He obviously is not the long term solution for any program, but I think he could give any team a shot in the arm for 3-4 years.
I doubt he ever coaches at a big time school. He seems to have taken a liking to commentary work and his buyout is still sticking it to LSU.

Completely disagree with your comment about Bama’s Gameplan not being different.
The QB Waggle and deep cross/drag route concepts off boot action from McCarron using play action was a large-scale adjustment game-to-game that early on caught LSU on defense. On top of that I have sauces who say Saban actually did film work leading up to the game and broke down our DB’s technique with respect to footwork. He saw something immediately post snap and as they came out of their breaks that he knew receivers could counter with technique that would create space.
Watching the replay more times than I care to admit, this was without question something that while subtle definitely worked. AJ stepped up and hit throws and that was a big deal for the offense but the waggle/boot and the cross/drags were very successful based on film study that Bama did that was-allegedly-due in part to Saban seeing a weakness on film.
You compare that to what our head coach contributed for us in the game...and this is why Nick Saban will go down as the greatest college football coach of all time. To be honest, his name deserves mentioning in any conversation about coaching, regardless of level.

At the end he signed autographs and took questions. Les Miles came up and the conversation teetered to the 21-0 game.
Tom said he interviewed players from both teams the day after the bowl match up was announced. He said the LSU players all talked about how they deserved to play OK State since they already beat UA on the road (I would feel that way too). He said that all the LSU players complained about the matchup but not a single one cited that they thought they were better than UA. He said he asked a few LSU players if they thought they were a better team than Bama. He said it was crickets.
