2002 was the last year Faurot Field had real grass. I want to go cry now.

Hard to grow grass in Faurot

Why?

Plenty of yankee schools have grass. Is there some other reason?

I have heard the bedrock in the ground makes it hard to grow.

A quick google search said something about the air flow as well.

True. But we went back to grass in 1996, and you can be damn sure that it is staying.

In high school (back in the 80s) I got the opportunity to play on artificial turf. We all were excited to play on it, but after the game we realized it was nothing special and it caused "carpet" burns on your elbows, etc.

I was underwhelmed.

Scott Field is the only field to win best field multiple times (2015 most recently) as voted by The Sports Turf Managers Association, so I think we're still doing alright

I remember games in the late 70s and early 80s that were played in November on natural turf, it looked like they were playing on dirt the grass was so brown. Things have advanced so much with turf today, it is a sign of cheapness for a Southern team to have artificial turf.

We brought back grass last year. Wish we hadn't. I thought the turf looked better than our grass does

I spent 30+ years piloting 7 different types of Military Aircraft, how is that English degree working for you.

Not sure the exact reason but they always had trouble getting grass to grow and the maintenance cost were sky high as a result.

If you're ever on Pensacola Beach and get down toward Portofino, PM me and I'll have the guard let you in to visit me.

Just there last week visiting my old stomping grounds. Amazed how much they trashed PCB area, use to be a quiet area. Now the area is like Freaknik in Atlanta.

I almost wonder if they actually save that much money. My high school (in Memphis) installed field turf in the mid 2000s and I believe recently replaced it. I feel like it costs close to a million to install field turf on a football field, and if schools are replacing them every ten years, is it really saving them that much money? I know our "grounds crew" were a bunch of day laborers and the guy who oversaw everything doubled as an assistant baseball and football coach. Granted I am completely ignorant to all of the other costs that go into maintaining a grass field, but would it really exceed 100k/year?

Our local high school put it in a number of years ago. The idea was sold on the annual maintenance costs were reduced but at the time, an expansion high school in the community, plus several middle schools were using it, in addition to the school where it sits. They also use it for girls and boys soccer. One early season rain during a football game pretty much ruined it for the season. It was more of a necessity rather than a luxury. If they replaced the original, I am not aware but then I don't follow it as closely as I once did.

It's a little quieter down here at Portofino. It's at the end of the strip before you get to the Nat'l Seashore so we don't get as much traffic down here, plus you can't get into the place unless you're staying/live here. The stretch of beach between Portofino and Navarre is undoubtedly the most beautiful in Florida...and relatively secluded.
