it is pretty weird how movie rental stores, and music CD stores for the most part have gone extinct.

Look at the AC/Heater control in that 8 track picture.
That made me think of wing windows, sliding back glass windows, and gun racks in trucks.

Going to pick out your media at a store was part of an exciting experience. It was a great way to kill time and was something relaxing to look forward to. It also made for failsafe birthday and Christmas gifts. And owning an extensive collection of something that wasn't readily available to anyone without some semblance of effort was kind of a prideful effort.
I realize they had to go, but something more than yet another "old format" died with media becoming digital and widely available at home.
