Why is there a playoff committee to begin with?

Couldn't the BCS computers be used and just a four team playoff added?

Yes. The BCS formula was the best part of the BCS. But because LSU whined and cried about playing Bama again they had to have a committee

Because the rest of the country took their ball and quit after 1-9-12.

You overestimate LSU's influence.
The fact is that it was the worst BCSCG. No one wanted to have to go through that crap again - not just LSU fans.

I think the worst was in 2001 when Miami trounced Nebraska...which by the way was the first time a team that didn't win its division was in the BCSCG...

Most people thought that Bama deserved the rematch, especially after LSU became the first team to get shut out in the BCS era of championships.

People always slammed the computers due to pure ignorance. "COMPUTERS can't know anything about football! We need a human touch!" As though adding subjectivity and bias to the system was a good idea.

That was our fault...and by extension, LSU's fault.

The committee was the stupid icing on the stupid cake though.
If we are going to have a playoff, I don't like the BCS formula either. There needs to be set parameters on how you make it in.

So that the process can be rigged to favor certain programs that will generate more TV viewers.
The very fact that the broadcast opened last night with Reese Davis saying that Alabama and Ohio State are already locks for the playoff is all you need to know. This process is rigged for the Alabama's and the Ohio State's of the world. The Committee knows that. ESPN knows that. Everyone is on the same page.
In 2014, Ohio State jumped TCU because of the "importance of Conference Championships" to the committee. Yet now when its Ohio State that lacks a conference championship on its resume, a conference title seems completely unimportant to both the committee and the ESPN talking heads who always seem to be lockstep together with their opinions.
Kirk Herbstreit should not even be allowed to voice his opinion on this matter. For him to claim that 2014 and 2016 are "apples and oranges" and shouldn't even be compared shows his glaring bias. Why is it that the criteria to judge the teams changes from year to year, yet the teams that benefit from the shifting criteria always seem to stay the same?
It's rigged, that's why.
The TCU's, the Baylor's, and even the Penn State's of the world will always be left out if there is an Ohio State or an Alabama that can be inserted in their place.
This is why a committee was a bad idea from the very start.

No. The issue with the computers is that their formulas were kept secret. No one would ever know if Jeff Sagarin rigged his data because he was never forced to reveal his computer's formula. None of the computer rankings used in the BCS published their formulas.
Computers are fine as long as their formulas are transparent.
I wish we could go back to the old BCS rankings.... the only changes that needed to be made is forcing the computers to release their formulas so that there would be more transparency. Also, all human voters should have been forced to reveal their ballots each and every week to make sure there weren't certain voters rigging the system. And the Coaches' poll should be replaced all together... Coaches don't get to watch the games and most of the time they aren't even filling out their ballots.
It should have been the Harris Poll (33.3%), the AP Poll (33.3%) and the computers (33.3%) with complete transparency at all levels. Then take the four highest ranked teams and be done with it.

Spot on IMO. College football is becoming a shite show and that blows.

Ironically, the reason they instituted the committee (preventing 2 teams from the same division playing for a championship) is the very circumstance they find themselves in this year.
It's not the vile SEC this time tho so no biggie.
The BCS was just fine. 2/3rds human and 1/3 computer is perfect. We need a non-subjective variable as part of the formula.

Of course the objectivity of the BCS would be better, even in choosing play-off teams (and preferably 8 of them). But ESPN wants the subjectivity of prioritizing TV ratings, so that OSU and Notre Dame always get in when they're in the top 10. Get it? It's rigged!

Well, I was personally in touch with just about everyone, and they all agreed that it was just a boring arse game and they didn't want any part of it again and a new system was needed.

Let's not forget the other part of the equation. 59-0. If Ohio State didn't win that game in such dominating fashion they would not have been in the playoff.
