As well as put the ball on the floor and attack the rim. Defensively they both can protect the rim. Not many teams can run 2 guys with their size and abilities. Combine that with Cooper and some shooters. That's a team that can make a deep run

We still need a stopper at the 2/3. Defense still wins championships. I don't think Powell or Cooper either 1 will ever be defensive masters. Nor do I think JT or Jabari would be incredible on ball defenders. So a 3 needs to develop into that defensive stopper. That's my worry for next years team. I think we will be ok at the rim defending but probably give up to many open shots. Just my opinion. Have to wait and see

Who do we currently have who are playing the 3? Do you think any of them become that defensive weapon you're referring to?

I like Flannigan as a defender. He just needs to work on his outside shot so he isn't a liability offensively

Flanigan is at the 2 and Cambridge at the 3. I think both could be good defenders in different styles. I think 2 deep right now is something like this...
Cooper/Powell
Flanigan/Turbo/Johnson
Cambridge/Moore
Williams/Thor
Stretch/Cardwell
Cooper/Powell
Flanigan/Turbo/Johnson
Cambridge/Moore
Williams/Thor
Stretch/Cardwell

That leaves Franklin as odd man out. Not sure how much Turbo or Johnson will play either. Probably take lumps with Powell playing both the 1 and 2 in my opinion unless 1 of those 3 really step up.
It's gonna be a long long season with this kind of youth. Very exciting but not sure the guys know what it takes to win at this point maybe talent wins out in some games but mercy that's a young squad. We finish top 4 in the conference Bruce deserves coach of the year.

I think Cambridge and Flanigan both have the chance to be elite defensively.

Franklin played a great role last year where he could come in and light a fire under the team with his athleticism and energy. He plays the 4 right?

You're thinking of Jaylin Williams. Franklin barely played at all last year, only at the end of games already decided.

Jaylin will be a stud by the time he leaves. I also think we're going to struggle this year, but we have a good base as long as everyone stays. We should be able to make some good runs in the next few years.

I think I'm in the minority but I think we will be good this year.

I think we have good pieces, I just feel like most of them are guys who are going to be very good by their junior/senior years.

Ugh, you're right. I always mix those two up for some reason.

I trust whatever Bruce says about the team. He usually makes pretty honest statements about their play and development in practice, and we typically see it reflected in games.
One group of players that I think may be bettert than what others are saying is the sophomores like Flanigan, Cambridge, and Stretch. I think they may play better than we expect as sophomores which could make a big difference.

I definitely understand that line of thinking. Ultimately it comes down to 3 freshmen I am probably higher on than most.
Powell, Cooper, and Thor.
If those 3 can provide a real scoring punch, we have a chance to be pretty good. If not, we will struggle to put up points in a lot of games. I think the margins are pretty big for how this season could go.
I think guys like Flanigan, Cambridge, and Jaylin will all take a step forward and be solid but I don't think they have huge ceilings (except maybe Cambridge)

I think a lot of you are underestimating Turbo. Hard to say that with any confidence with practices closed due to Covid but the bits and pieces that do leak out suggest he's the favorite to start at the 2. We definitely need him to step up especially defensively. He and Cooper are the only 2 with the lateral quickness to stay in front of most guards in the conference. I'm not saying Flannigan, Cambridge and Powell aren't good athletes but at their height I worry about them defending against smaller guards. I don't see Johnson as anything other than a spot up shooter.

Yeah, Johnson had some good moments earlier last season, but his production and minutes really declined once conference play started.
Interesting thoughts on Turbo though. I guess most of the silence on him is a result of him not getting much action last season. I know he missed preseason because of injury, but I hope this season, he's ready to step up.

I hope you are referring to potential because Cooper was a very very poor defender in high school. Sure he out talented some guys he defended and got some steals but in no way was he a move your feet defender kind of player.

Yes. Just the required quickness. Technique and effort will have to improve from high school. That's true with 95% of high school kids transitioning to college. Okoro was an exception to that rule.
