That cuts both ways... make the shot, then your opponent has 5 seconds to get up their own shot to answer. You can cover a ton of court in 5 seconds.

Put the pressure on the other team to score. We've seen plenty of evidence it's a good strategy in these last two games.

Yep. It's really not that complicated. When tied you go for the last shot. When behind you try to get a good shot with time on the clock. If you make it and there's 5 seconds, fine.

ust my preference to get a look earlier in the clock when you're losing. Miss the shot and/or put back but have 5-8 seconds remaining for the win or tie. Just how I see it. No knock on Bruce or anything.
This! 2 games in a row where we had virtually no chance to tie it at the end after their free throws. All because of poor clock management. That is squarely on bruce for not instilling a sense of urgency for the sitaution.

I actually disagree. Priority #1 is to get a good shot that isn't rushed. Priority #2 is to leave enough time for an offensive rebound and second chance.

You are talking about a unique scenario in a one point game. No matter the result of the initial possession, you can foul and still be guaranteed a chance to tie/take lead in the end. Twice I have seen auburn in a situation where a desperation heave is the best case scenario at the end. This is unacceptable. Chuma takes his shot with 15 and we are attempting a 3 at the buzzer to tie. Jared goes with 15 against UK and we are doing the same. Instead we burned clock and forfeited our chance at one last possession.
2 possessions > 1 possession
2 possessions > 1 possession

You're conveniently leaving out the additional possession for the other team.
1 good shot with a chance for an offensive rebound + putback > 2 rushed shots + additional possession for the other team
1 good shot with a chance for an offensive rebound + putback > 2 rushed shots + additional possession for the other team

No, not at all. I specifically stated that you can foul and still have a one possession game no matter what. 2 games with 1 good shot and a chance for an offensive putback ended in defeat. I prefer quantity of opportunities given that our team is not an efficient scoring offense (never above 50% fgm).

And Bruce Pearl pointed out that before that shot by Okeke w/ 5 secs left, that Brown and Bryce had good looks, but decided not to shoot it for some reason, even though we were only down 1.
So it was our 2 veteran guards who passed up the shots that you wanted w/ more time on the clock. That's not on Pearl to me.

wtf? What you are suggesting is stupid clock management. What if we made those shots with more time on the clock? Than UK or SC would have plenty of time to take their own last shot
You always want to be taking the last shot

that's what puzzled me about that possession. Brown made a horrible decision.
Harper was calling for the ball, wide open in the corner, earlier in the possession and Brown decided he wanted to be the one making the decision.

Meh, it’s situational. Extending the game is a better strategy especially being a scarred Auburn basketball fan.

A,team that shoots 45% from the field should never rely on one shot. Has to be a negative EV

To tonight's game. This feels critical right now. Yes, it's still early, but we really need to get on conference hot streak.

No pressure:

The loser of tonight's game in Starkville between Auburn and Mississippi State will be 2-4 in SEC play. No such thing as a "must win" in January, but this is as close as it gets for both teams.

If you assume independency for simplicity, it is better to wait for the last shot probability wise

We’ve only had 2 conf homes games... this isn’t a must win, but would be really nice to get a 2nd road win to offset the UK loss.

I don't think anyone is saying it's an official "must win," but if we lose tonight that gives us 4 conference losses with 12 conference games remaining.
Meanwhile LSU is 5-0, UT 6-0, UK 5-1, USCe 5-1. AU went 13-5 in conference play last year. We need to right the ship tonight.

If you are talking about winning only, then maybe. If you add in the chance for a tie, then going early is best. I don't have the statistics to run the numbers.
All i know is in 2 consecutive 1 point games we managed to get 2 real shots, 1 flailing putback opportunity and an almost half court heave. We can do better. I doubt K/Wright employ the same strategy

I'm surprised we're favored
