College presidents and networks have squeezed every dollar out of us they can. I wouldn't say it's dying but the popularity has peaked and if it gets unaffordable for the common fan, the entire sport will erode.

The sport is definitely going through an evolution. I think the awareness of exactly what it does to someone's body after playing for 25-30 years is finally hitting the lower ranks and youth leagues.
I wouldn't say it's dying by any stretch. It's a billion-dollar industry and there are enough, notice I said enough and not including everyone in the world, people with the cash to afford going to games. But it's the price you pay when you begin to build state-of-the-art athletic facilities to keep up with the Joneses.

The player safety issues (especially with the recent CTE discoveries) will probably end football as we know it in the next 20 years or so. But I don't think the appeal is declining nationally as much as you think it is.

You make some very good points. This concussion issue will soon result in a huge case against the NCAA which may very well force some serious changes. I see pay for play and healthcare insurance involved.

College football maybe has peaked in the early 2000s but I don't think it will die. It isn't as enjoyable as it once was that is for sure.

I am okay with football declining and with kids around the country rejecting the sport in favor of other sports like soccer.
college football will never decline in the southeast region, i only care about our league and a few other teams and none of those are going to stop playing football the right way.

Absolutely agree. I don't know if the enthusiasm for the sport has gone down tho.

It may be premature to say it is dying as it is still a gigantic industry, but the OP makes some interesting remarks no doubt.

Liberals and contact sports is why, if true.
Everything is cyclic tho. I'm sure it will surge again. Also ncaa football game not being released can't be HELPING youth enthusiasm.

The "war on football" is pretty clearly an ESPN power play against the only major American professional sport to which they do not own the lion's share of the broadcast rights.

You also left out the shrinking of ESPN via cordcutting + a la carte programming.

You're insane if you think ESPN wants football to shrink.

Thanks, Obama?
This is quite the logical leap or better known as horseshite. It comes down to money. Did the liberals sue the NFL? No, it was past players.

Maybe in Florida. At places like Alabama Auburn and Tennessee, it will never die.

I think they're idiots, but it's the only thing that makes sense. They are really the only major media outlet pushing the "football is a major health hazard" story, and they push it constantly. If they're so concerned about player safety, where are the similar reports about hockey? You don't hear anyrhing about it, because ESPN owns the broadcast rights for the NHL. ESPN's thinking appears to be that if football dies off, or survives as a shell of itself, football fans will gravitate to other sports which are shown on ESPN.

Just because Florida sucks now does not make this true.
