How much does Dabo really know about X's and O's

It seems to me like he is a good recruiter but without his assistants he isn't really that knowledgeablele about football.
Am I wrong here?

He doesn't strike me as an X's and O's guy.
Recruiter, motivator, figurehead. He's done well with his assistants, though. Particularly his coordinators.

This has always been a point of contention between myself and my Clemson friends. I say what you have said. They say the opposite. When I ask for proof, they don't come up with anything to show it true. I will say he is a good recruiter and has surrounded himself with good assistants. As for Xs and Os, I just don't see it.

About as much as Smart knows about stopping good offenses.
Kirby Smart is so grossly overrated, it's almost laughable.
Saban made Smart, he'll get exposed even more at Georgia.

Elaborate please.
The guy has never even been a coordinator.

Well, he signs all the letters he writes recruits with them, so I'd say he knows a lot.

You don't have to be a genius to be a successful CFB coach.

It doesn't matter, that's what many great coaches do (see Bobby Bowden). Recruit, run the show but leave the X's and O's to your coordinators with great leadership.

We don't know what he really knows about football. There is nothing wrong with being a CEO type coach in college. Manage recruiting, assistants, practice, develop and discuss strategy. Dabo has done well to put Clemson where it is. I used to make fun of him but he deserves all the credit.

I'll say this, the guy has to be smart. He has definitely put together a staff that is very knowledgeable and good at what they do, recruited well, and hyped up his players to buy into his staff's scheme. But no I don't think X's and O's wise he is all that gifted.

Agree.
In the losses since 2013 the defense has let up 34, 45, 23, 42, and 43 points.
Yet no one blames smart.
With the talent going through TTown, anything over 30 points is inexcusable.

I'm not criticizing his role as a head coach at all. Bringing in Deshaun Watson has put him over the top when it comes to the program he has, but I've just never seen him actually go into detail about anything about the actual game or game plan before.

No, you aren't wrong at all. He went from selling insurance, to coaching wide receivers, to head coach. The first year he hired Napier to run his offense, and he tried to be involved in calling plays, which led to them going 6-7, and Napier getting fired.
I will give Dabo credit though, he knows he's not an X and O's coach, so he went out and found the best coaches he could to handle his offense and defense. That formula clearly has worked for him. He recruits extremely well, he's a motivator, and he provides entertainment for press conferences and post game interviews. It's working for Clemson, and no reason for them to change it. He's more a CEO than a coach. If the offense is having a problem, he isn't going to go over and figure out what they need to do like an Art Briles, or vice versa like a Dantonio with defense.
