After thinking about it and having watched the past few bama games, we aren't as bad as some on here think, and Allen is certainly not a bad QB.
First, the bad:
We need a running game like Vassili Zaitsev needs a goddamn rifle. Without a running game of any kind, you're asking a true soph QB with less than a year starting to beat Nick Saban's half-man, half-zone defense pretty much by himself, with poor protection. Obviously, Allen couldn't get it done.
Our run defense needs to get better. A lot better.
Our OL needs to get better.
Ok that's done. Now the positives:
Special teams is solid. We blocked a punt and returned another one for a TD. Kaser was on point all game. Bertolet looked like a good kicker, and we were asking for some long FGs all day.
Defense held Bama's offense to 20 points, which is the only stat that matters. Our DL is getting better every week, and is probably the best in the conference as a standalone unit. LB and DB play improved in the second half (partly because of Kelly leaving, but one man doesn't account for their entire running game grinding to a halt) and has been better every week. We are going to be very good by the end of the year.
Kyle Allen is a good QB. Is he going to win a championship? I think so, but it probably isn't this year barring bama losing another one and us winning out (both of which can still happen). I was initially upset with playcalling, but I don't think that was the issue. The issue was we couldn't run the football. We tried a lot of outside runs (which was the only thing that worked for OM) and they got stuffed. We are having difficulty run blocking, and when the defense knows you aren't going to run the football, they can just speed-rush the QB all day, which is what they did. Allen was under pressure all game. Should he have scrambled a bit more? Yeah, and I think that is on Spav coaching wise. But aside from that, I'm not sure what else you do. They were rushing 4 guys and getting pressure all game, with no run game to take some of the heat off. No one else is likely to dominate us that badly, not even LSU.
Overall, we looked good enough to win the game, fluke shite happens sometimes. Bama had a 5-0 turnover margin to OM, worse than ours, and came roaring back over the past few games. We didn't collapse, we fought and fought until the end. We are a good football team, but we have weaknesses, just like everyone else. Christensen needs to start earning his paycheck over the next 2 years, and I think we continue to challenge for the west. JUST LIKE WE ARE CHALLENGING NOW.

We suck, we're going to go 7-5 with Vanderbilt and Western Carolina being the only wins left IF THAT!!!

I'm not overly concerned because I still think we are better than every team left on the schedule except LSU. If we go 10-2 (or even 9-3) it's a pretty good year.
With that said, I don't understand what we want to be on offense. I think they want to move to an offense that runs the ball and features TEs and H Backs more (which I'm cool with) but we don't have anywhere close to the personnel in place to be able to do that right now. We are left with some weird hybrid that is inconsistent and doesn't do anything particularly well.

as frustrated as i am with Kyle right now. i agree with the OP.
I think that this team still has an 11-1 or 10-2 ceiling and that's not bad compared to what anybody on this board (or tRant for that matter) thought.
the d got gashed up the middle, kyle made 2 super dumb throws, 1 questionable at best, all against a better seasoned team... and that was it.

Agree.
Bama couldn't ovecome their TO against Ole Miss and we couldn't overcome ours against the Tide.
Consider this thoug: Even with all the tomfrickery going on in the first half, we had the opportunity to be within a SINGLE POINT of Bama had we converted the blocked punt into a touchdown. The Tide was in disarray at that point. We had the crowd back in full force and we had the opportunity. Some stupid penalties took us into a very long field goal opportunity that was missed. This series was THE pivotal point of the game. They were better than ours then.
We aren't that farr off.

Bama's special teams are laughably bad and will cost them again at some point. I don't understand how a person like Saban who is all about attention to detail can have a unit that disorganized

I think I made a post somewhere in the rant universe a few weeks ago how uterly surprising it is that Bama is truly just awful across the board with their special teams. I really think it's one of the most surprising issues in the entire country this year

Or at the very least we need to run jet sweeps 10x a game instead of twice

I melted so bad after the Arkansas win, thought we were looking at a carbon copy of last season. I don't think this loss even rustled me that bad, take a way a fluke qb performance of 4 picks and 3 being pick sixes and this is a very different game. Agree that we definitely need to improve on oline, run game, and linebacker play but this ain't a bad team. We've got a shot to go 10-2 which I would have been very happy with if you had told me that before the season.

We've been "not that far off" for the last 3 decades. "Sleeping giant" my arse. This program is comatose, in a precestent vegetative state. At some point, the "sleeping giant" needs to wake the frick up and start smashing shite. I am not knocking you fir bringing in some reason and logic to the discussion, but right now...frick logic. frick patience. frick potential.
Now, Goddammit!! We need to wreck this shite NOW. No more fricking excuses.

I had us going 8-4 preseason. Now id pick us at 10-2. It sucks to lose, but I promise you that melting isn't going to have a positive effect on the team. Taking a step back and looking at this rationally, we're still going to exceed expectations this season.

we are on the verge of winning 10 games, having a top 10 ranking, and playing in a major bowl. i dont get why you thought this was the year we were going to win the west but a season like the one that has been laid out is the exact season we should be having right now

When can we ever expect a championship run? Next season?
How will things be any different? We will still be missing LBs and a decent run game. What do we expect to change? How will it be different?
There is no difference. Same song, different verse. It is not going to change. It never changes. We can never win a game that moves the program forward without shitting the bed somewhere else.
Tired of it.
This team needs a lot of work and will continue to need a lot of work. If we win 10 games, I will be somewhat satisfied, but anyone with a halfassed rushing game will beat this team.
Until this middle school run defense stops giving up 250 yards a game to one RB, I expect losses to Ole Miss, South Carolina, Auburn, and LSU, at a minimum.

I've felt this for a long time tbh and every time it seems like we are a year away, that year gets pushed back and that is happening again rn. I still firmly believe we finish 10-2 this year with a big bowl win but we aren't getting a natty next year either. Just not happening when you have to go on the road against bama. Also, I believe it to be impossible for us to win a natty w/ Spav as our OC. Not saying he's horrible but he's not up for that lol

I have zero faith in our offensive staff at this point. Zero.
