My grandfather always talks about how good the 1957 AU defense was. He said the fans were disappointed if the team gave up 100 yards.

I mean except for the 2011 Alabama defense allowed 8.2 points per game and all. I'm sure those numbers are especially biased.
They gave up less than nine points per game in the modern era, dumbass.

Like you said, pefect storm. Lost #1 ranking, dropped the 13 spots, the cover of Sports Illustrated that came out the Thursday before the game featured Tennessee with a scathing article on how Tenn embarrassed AU and made Bo Jackson quit.
AU was absolutely furious and embarrassed which Dye talks about in his book.
Then Ole Miss lost their qb and, perfect storm.

Television/ABC had come to Knoxville for Bo and SI was there to put him on the cover. Instead, the Tennessee defense stopped Bo and QB Tony Robinson became a Heisman contender. Robinson was one of the greatest to ever play QB at UT but he blew out his knee in the Bama game which started him on a path to self-destruction.
But that day, Robinson not Bo was the star of the show and Sports Illustrated abandoned their prior plans and put Tony on the cover instead:
October 7, 1985, edition of Sports Illustrated under the caption, "The Tennessee Waltz: Tony Robinson Buries Auburn."

That defense isn't an all-great level defense.
If you want to list them as the top defense in the 2010s era go ahead and do it. They don't matchup to the numbers some of the defenses that I listed.

It is hilarious some people think modern football started in 2007 or some stupid year like that.
You can tell when some posters started watching college football since they have no knowledge for the history of the sport.

No one has mentioned the greatest struggle of two elite defenses shutting down two prolific offenses ever. No names needed... only a score: 3-2.

Yep, there is the cover. I believe the article inside read "The Tennessee Air Show".
AU fans remember that SI issue that are old enough. Dye of course got a hold of it and made sure all the players read it right before ole miss. SI really ripped AU and especially Bo bad.

Never again mention the "Starkville Shootout" for both our sake.

That Georgia win was complete and utter annihilation. They devastated Hawaii in every facet of football. One of the most thorough dismantlings I've eve
I remember thinking before the game that I had no idea how it was going to go (UGA was favored, but we all know that doesn't mean anything). I then remember hearing Brennan talking about how fast and physical Washington was in Hawaii's 35-28 win over them. Washington was 2-10 that season. At that point, I had a feeling it was gonna get ugly
Another one from UGA honestly was the Missouri game last season. Missouri never crossed the 34 yard line and ran fewer than five plays in UGA territory.
Non UGA/SEC: It wasn't the most statistically dominant, but I remember when Pat White was at WVU how amazing that offense was, and got shut down cold by an awful Pitt team in 2007. One of the most stunning performances I've ever seen.

Heck, the Miami 2001 defense forced 25 more turnovers than the 2011 Alabama defense.
Posted on 5/10/15 at 7:53 pm to nebraskafaninwi
But, uhh, yeah they do? They are universally held as the best defense since the 1992 Alabama squad and one of the best of all time.
ANY of the defenses you listed would be shredded by a competent modern offense and you know it.

Cool stat bro.
The Alabama defense allowed a 24% opponent third down conversion percentage, 72 rushing yards per game, a 2.4 YPC average, and 3 rushing TDs.
We can both arbitrarily select favorable statistics.
Producing turnovers =/= elite defense
Preventing the team from scoring = elite defense
Plus, 2001 Big East was a JOKE.

Yep, you are a young kid that lacks knowledge. People that are young always say the latest teams would dominate teams from the past by 100 point and other stupid stuff like that.
Alabama 1992 is the best defense in Alabama history. Alabama had more dominating teams in the past.
Also, since you need to be educated on how this works, you gauge teams for how they dominated the competition at the time the games were played and you don't compare a team that plays in 2032 to a team that played 1890. That is dumb and shows a lack of knowledge for the history of the game.
The Miami 2001 and Nebraska 1995 teams would destroy any other football team to ever put on helmets. Those are easily the most dominating teams ever and it isn't even close.

Which makes Alabama all the more impressive. They dominated everyone without a fluky turnover margin. That defense was historically great, especially considering offenses now are so much better than they were several decades ago.
2001 Miami was a better overall team, but 2011 Alabama had as good of a defense as anyone. That team kicked the shite out of everyone they played. They had one close loss vs LSU and turned in one of the great defensive performances ever in the rematch.

Whoopy dooo....a defense that I listed had more dominating stats and a better rush defense AND forced more turnovers.

I don't remember the game but I do remember Dye talking about it in his book. AU was PISSED after the AP dropped them 13 spots from 1 to 14 due to one loss at UT.
He had a right to be pissed in retrospect but the reason behind the drop was because Tennessee was a 7-5 team the year before and going through a downcycle and rebuild period similar to the one we've been in. Auburn was our 2nd game and at the time I doubt anyone expected us to do the following: tie #10 UCLA, win #1 Auburn, win #15 Bama, win #2 Miami (had Miami won against us in the Sugar Bowl they'd have been national champs) and many more.
Every single team we played that season was either ranked when we played and/or finished with a top 20 ranking. Not even top 25 but all in the top 20. Hell Vandy was ranked 10 and Kentucky was also ranked as were every single one of our OOC foes.
In the end, we finished 1st in the SEC and with 9 wins, 1 loss, and 2 ties. And I'll give everyone here ONE guess as to who we lost to.
That said, no one gave this team in any respect until the Sugar Vols beat Miami.

If a team has a +40 or so turnover margin, it needs a lot of big breaks and lucky bounces. There's a reason why no team ever puts up such a massive positive turnover margin two years in a row. I loved that Miami team, but they gave up 27 to a mediocre FSU team and 24 to a mediocre VT team.
