Kinda of a spinoff from the Derrick Thomas Thread. (It got me to thinking about some old defensive performances)

I barely remember anything about the game...just that it was one of the most thorough beatings I had ever seen. It stuck in my mind because I knew the Ole Miss QB that started that game...he was the backup, (McKinney) and I believe the starter, (Kent Austin) was hurt the week before.

What I remember:
1. Auburn was ranked #1 the week before and lost to Tennessee.
2. Ole Miss was struggling and was starting McKinney, the backup.
3. McKinney and the rest of the Ole Miss offense just took an absolute beating.

Auburn won 41-0.

Ole Miss had two first downs the entire game. The first downs came on Ole Miss' 1st two plays of the game.

Ole Miss completed 2 of 13 passes for 1 yard total.

Anybody else have memories of that game?

I have not found, or looked too hard for highlights from that game. If anyone can link them I would appreciate it.

Not entirely SEC but one of the most dominating defensive performances I've ever seen (not including LSU or 1-9) was Georgia's Sugar Bowl win over Hawaii and Colt Brennan.

I told some idiots on Reddit who were talking shite that "Brennan won't look nearly as good when he's lying flat on his back, which is where he'll be most of the night against UGA." They tore me to pieces, lol. Of course, none of them showed up after the game to eat their crow...

I don't have any memory of that game.

The best defenses I can remember by decade were:

80s = Oklahoma 1985. The Boz years!!! Still my favorite LB ever for the college game.

90s = Nebraska 1995, Washington 1991

2000s = Ohio State 2002, Miami 2001, USCw 2008, Alabama 2009

2010s = nobody has stood out as a completely dominating defense.

In their defense, they may have mistakenly assumed that the Rainbow Warriors win against Bama 5 years earlier was against an SEC caliber team.

I agree, that was a very good performance.

You're forgetting the three co-GOATs, dumbass.

That Georgia win was complete and utter annihilation. They devastated Hawaii in every facet of football. One of the most thorough dismantlings I've ever seen.

I probably would not have thought as much about it except for knowing the QB that took the beating.

I agree with the defenses you listed. I had actually forgotten about the Washington squad...they were impressive.

1992 Alabama - I will give you that one.
2011 Alabama - no.
2011 LSU - no.

You obviously don't have much knowledge of how great some past defenses were and are just going off of SEC media thoughts.

I don't allow that sort of language in my threads!

Just kidding.

1988 Notre Dame was another great defense that I remember now. One of the best, if not the best rush defense since I started watching college football.

Yep, that was a great team. I doubt we see them return to that level again in our lifetime just like how I doubt we see Colorado return to some of their great squads.

I remember it well. It was a primetime game on ESPN. Austin was hurt and OM had McKinney playing along with freshmen, Chris Osgood(who would transfer to A&M) and Mark Young. It was ugly. Bo ran wild and Auburn's defense was on lock down.

Wasn't that the game that Greg Favors had like 5 sacks?

I don't remember the game but I do remember Dye talking about it in his book. AU was PISSED after the AP dropped them 13 spots from 1 to 14 due to one loss at UT.

And the beat down was remarkable. Few more stats..

Ole Miss opened the game with 2 first downs. They never got another and ended with 9 total yards. 1 passing yard, 8 rushing.

Bo Jackson ran for 240 yards in 3 quarters.

AU set the SEC record with 28 rushing first downs on the way to over 600 yards.

I thought I remembered it being on ESPN as well...was not sure though.

I remember it being a "perfect storm."

1. Auburn was very good.
2. Had not only lost the week before but had lost the #1 ranking.
3. Ole Miss was outmatched before losing a starting QB.

It was just one of the most dominating performances I could ever remember seeing...even if it was Auburn.

Wow...didn't realize they had dropped that far.

Ole Miss had 20+ yards rushing after 1st 2 plays of the game and finished with 8 yards rushing total...and Ole Miss was only sacked 3 times that game.

It really was unreal.
