Wrong. There are certainly other ways to tell if you overpaid than for the coach to admit they would have taken less, that was merely one example. When you are dealing with a unique good or service it is extremely difficult to determine if a person over paid or not. If the exact same good or service was available and someone else got it for less, then you could make that determination. You can't do that with unique goods or services.
With unique goods or services, usually you will not be able to tell if you overpaid until you either resell the good or service or by some other metric of production or return on the investment after the fact. To say that Alabama overpaid Avery Johnson implies that you know they could have gotten him for less right now. None of know that. Therefore, we will have to wait and see to make that judgment.
Sophistry bullshite that mangles economic terms.
If you want to misuse economics, then it is clear that he is overpaid. His value as judged by the market was that people were willing to pay him not to coach at back to back stops in his career. The market decided that his unique service of coaching was worth so little as to pay him not to do it for them any more. By that standard, he was overpaid no matter what.
In any event, to pay AJ on the level of those in the profession with much greater achievement in the college game is an objective overpayment.

What about paying market value for Johnson? and why is that not an option?

Isn't that Tennessee's line for this offseason?

This isn't that unique. There's 351 Division 1 basketball coaches. You put a guy with zero direct experience in the top 3% of salaries.
Having said that, depending on how the contract is structured, it could be better. If he starts at $2.5ish with automatic escalators, it's probably not that big of a deal.

What is that number and how did you come up with it?

So people are having a real discussion, and you really think the play is to come in with the meaningless message board bullshite? Why did you omit the rent references and dickriding and all the other unoriginal bullshite that no serious thinking person cares about. Go get an invitation to the Arkansas board, junior.

It's called negotiating... The guy has zero collegiate experience( helps you negotiate)... Nobody was knocking down his door to coach at the collegiate level...So you'd rather take a total gamble and pay him 3 mill over 6 years... Makes no sense and I hope you're not a business owner...

How the frick did he get 6 years on the deal? That's what I don't understand. Holy goodness.

No clue, but that wasn't my point. The poster I quoted mentioned preferring to overpay for Johnson versus pay market value for another coach.
So the from that becomes: what was wrong with market value for Johnson?
I'm not making any claims that Johnson is being overpayed

Nothing gives me more confidence in a coach than knowing we just lowballed the shite out of them and they were so desperate that they took whatever we offered.
I know its crazy to think that a coach that can successfully sell themselves might be a good thing.

AJ is our coach. We will pay him as we see fit.
3mil- 4mil- or 10mil. it is not your problem.
You are not Bama fans so as what Bama pays anyone who is employed by them is no sweat to you.

LOL...Wut???....his value is what the market bears....nothing more and nothing less....that Bama overpaid is nothing more than your interpretation.
You need to keep in mind we are not simply looking to plug n' play another coach. If that were the case, we could go hire some assistant or another mid-major jerk-off no one outside of basketball circles ever heard of for $ 1 million a year....
We don't want to do that becuase we have a lot of money. We are trying to elevate and transform the culture and brand of the program and we think CAJ is the guy to take us to the next level. So, in Bama's estimation its an investment worth making.

Market would be $2.2ish IMO.
That's what Barnes is getting at Tennessee.

He has no idea. Someone please tell me the market value and how they came up with it for a former NBA Champion that has also been coach of the year in the NBA. Yes he was fired, but hell most coaches in the NBA have been fired at one time or another.
Explain to me what market value is for this coach, and don't try to tell me $1 million since he has never coached in college. You and I both know he wasn't coming to Bama for some low ball salary. He might be an epic failure, but Bama athletics isn't going bankrupt because they overpaid Avery Johnson for a few years. It is worth the gamble in my opinion.

Hell, you guys have been bad in baseball and basketball for how long? You gave Grant a 7 year deal and were forced to renegotiate it then gave him 5 more years. It isn't like your AD has been killing it outside of just the one sport. So deflect all you want, but Bama has its own AD problems.

You are certainly welcome to overpay your coach. You are not free to pretend you're not overpaying him.
ETA: it's the rant. You are free to pretend you're not overpaying him. And everyone else is free to point it out.
