I really liked the quaint, well-kept downtown of Apalachicola and the mom/pop stores. Had a great lunch at one of the restaurants, can't remember the name though. Port St. Joe was really cool too. Just too many places and not enough time. Muscle Shoals sounds like a really appealing future destination.

St. Francisville and New Roads; a couple of years ago you could have taken the ferry from SF to NR and during the ride over you could munch on some peanuts bought from the peanut lady who set up her stand (well it was a chair) near the ferry ramp. But now it's shut down and it's a damn shame

The dinner train out of Bardstown is awesome, too.

Banner Elk and Boone are pretty fricking rad, too.
Love both of those, drive through both when I take 421 from Winston Salem to Johnson City. Linville Falls is great too. I'm in the process of moving to Asheville right now.

Some of these places have already been mentioned but to me food is one thing that makes a place memorable. Here are a few places I'd go just for the food.
Apalachicola, FL: Ira's at Gibson Inn
Greenwood, MS: Delta Bistro
New Braunfels (Gruene), TX: ClearSprings Restaurant, Gristmill, Gruene River Grill
Chattanooga, TN: Maple Street Biscuits

When you're in BR for an LSU game - sometime in your retirement - check out St. Francisville.

Weston MO. Great Irish Festival every year, Distillery, Brewery and Cigar Maker all in a quaint river town of less than 2000.

I've always been fond of Newberry, SC and definitely Camden, SC, home of the Carolina Cup. Wild times there in college.

Queen City of the black belt, Selma, Al. It's a must see to make yourself feel better about where you chose to live.
