Hypotheticals can be fun but how good would Sims have been if he started the past 3 years? Would he have won more than AJ? Is Kiffin to get the credit? With him as OC would Bama be looking at 4 in a row?

Kiffen is a big difference but I also think that the team actually wants to play for Sims. He unites the entire team.

They are both really good. Sims can make any throw that AJ can make(and more) IMO, but AJ was a really heady game manager. Obviously Sims is much more dangerous and effective with his legs.

I think its safe to say that Sims was better than AJ in their respective first years starting.

No.

Kiffin is a better OC than Nuss.

All I can do is look at the on the field transgressions and say that:

Yes. Sims is better than McCarron.

Sims has been great and has probably become a lot of fans all - time favorite player. You cannot speak enough about his dedication and determination to play QB at Bama. However, do not forget how good AJ was when he was here. And AJ didn't have as good an OC as Sims has had

Sims is definitely better than 1st year AJ. Sims has had a better season than AJ had any year except 2012, in which aj threw 30 td and like 3 picks. The difference of course is with OCs, AJ would likely have put up some big numbers under Kiffin, but i dont think we would have been as successful this year with aj as we were with sims, because aj would have been sacked about 20-30 times, and cant move the chains with his feet (although he did a time or two in his career). AJ likely would not have needed all the sideline communication though, so we probably would not have struggled on the road so much. Both are great players. Its hard not to let AJs douchey behavior after he left color perception of him.

Its a shame we won't have 3 years of Sims to better compare the two.

AJ was somewhere between a gamemanager and gamebreaker. He was both underrated & overrated at the same time. AJ was a winner, but his attitude probably contributed to our play down the stretch in 2013. He wasn't a "great" QB in terms of his ability but he was better than a McElroy or JPW type QB.

IMO, if we had AJ this year, we lose another game or two. Blake has made plays (running & passing) that AJ never made and we needed that type of QB play this year. Blake also proved to be just as clutch. When AJ had a bad game, he rarely turned it around. Blake seems to possess the ability to get of a funk quicker. Maybe that credit goes to Kiffin, so its tough to judge on that criteria.

That all being said, Blake Sims is a better QB at this moment in his career.

No, but he may be a better leader.

Nope. Better athlete, yes. Only thing he's really better at though.

Love em both. Both are great players.

No way can I say right now that Sims is better than AJ. Statistically? Yes. But I need to see Sims performance in the playoffs before I can make a definitive statement like that. Are we so quick to forget that AJ was clutch in the two title games?

I'll revisit this post in a month with a more definitive answer.

He can't read defenses like aj. His deep ball is much better. That is all I got.

Very tough question

Had we had Mccarron this year instead of Sims, we would be a 3 or 4 loss team.

Mccarron on the other hand won multiple championships.

Both very good in their own right

Better? I can't say that. I think Sims benefits from his legs and Kiffin. Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of having a mobile QB it adds so much for the defense to worry about. It would be interesting to see if Sims had more than 1 year at Bama...

Sims is slightly better statistically.

In terms of leadership Sims is better and it's not even a contest.

Brandon Avalos was better than both of them. Dude never lost a game as a starter.

Gotta give McCarron credit for doing it with a terrible OC.

Bump. I said that I would address this question after the national championship game.

Who is the better qb? I'm not sure. There seems to be so many aspects of being a qb. Leadership would go to Blake by a mile. Overall athletic ability and ability to extend plays also goes to Blake. Blake also throws a better deep ball.

Yet, if we were playing in the title and I had to choose just one qb to lead us on the field, I would choose AJ. AJ is a total douche as a person, not the greatest leader, but he has a certain hyper focus during title games that is unmet by any of the QBs in the CNS era. AJ faced one of the best cfb defenses of the modern era as a RS sophomore and had his best game all year. The next year at ND he also played out of his mind.

It isn't about the W/L result from the title so much as how the qb played in the game. Had Blake simply avoided the turnovers during the game, he would rank above AJ as the overall better qb. The reality is that had Blake avoided the turnovers we wouldn't still be a overanalyzing this game.

Blake Sims QBR against tOSU: 25.8
AJ QBR in 21-0: 70.3
AJ QBR against ND: 93.3

If we are talking about the guy that I'd like to sit down and have a beer with, or the guy that I would want to date my sister, give me Blake Sims. If we are talking about a regular season game, give me Sims or AJ. If we are talking about the title, give me AJ.

AJ would have won a Heisman if Kiffin had showed up a year earlier!
