@Chandler_Rome: Wow. The #LSU guest captain list this week is star-studded: Billy Cannon, Bert Jones, Bradie James and Billy Baggett
Saw this on twitter and I admit I had to google Cannon to make sure this wasn't a hoax twitter. I can't recalls hearing much and/or anything about Cannon in the public in years? What's the deal, I mean he's "Everybody's All American"

He's a pretty private person. I wouldn't say a recluse, per se, but he pretty much likes to just stick to his work and family. He's much less reclusive now than in the past.

He was interviewed on the radio here this morning for about 20 minutes. He said this will be the first time he's ever been at midfield for a coin toss, including when he was a player.

Yeah that's pretty surprising? I understand the conviction but that was in the 80's? Guess it made him more private than reclusive per se?

Was he court ordered to work in the state pen?

Post conviction/jail time in a Federal pen,Cannon developed a huge gambling problem & lost most of his dental practice. This is one of the main reasons he ended up practicing at Angola, as he had no real practice anymore. He was into private poker games & owed money all over town, to the extent one gambler to whom he owed money picketed his dental office. But that was yrs ago & by all accounts he's rehabilitiated himself/his image. However, as a result, he did withdraw from public view for the most part.

Man didn't realize things had gotten that bad. However, I also think gambling, corruption and shady dealings are a part of the Louisiana fabric so I would think this it would be the one place that embraced him with open arms. No offense of course to its citizens

None taken. I met Billy at an LSU function years ago and he is as down to earth as they come. He still attends a few games every season.
