LSU Fans: Is Billy Cannon a Recluse?

However, I also think gambling, corruption and shady dealings are a part of the Louisiana fabric so I would think this it would be the one place that embraced him with open arms. No offense of course to its citizens

Not so much now. In the past, officials would not be convicted. But in the last 2 decades, Edwin Edwards, Ray Nagin, and others were caught, sentenced and sent to prison.
To his credit, Edwards was a pretty decent Governor, and was voted in over David Duke, a previous KKK leader. which would have been more embarassing to Louisiana - similar to what George Wallace was for Alabama...

For Louisiana politicians, at least, not the rest of us.

Post conviction/jail time in a Federal pen,Cannon developed a huge gambling problem & lost most of his dental practice. This is one of the main reasons he ended up practicing at Angola, as he had no real practice anymore. He was into private poker games & owed money all over town, to the extent one gambler to whom he owed money picketed his dental office. But that was yrs ago & by all accounts he's rehabilitiated himself/his image. However, as a result, he did withdraw from public view for the most part.

.....that's what I remember about it. Angola was the only place he could get a job. It had nothing to do with altruism.

Not common knowledge, but an authorized biography on him is coming out in the next year or so. He sat down for hours of interviews for the upcoming book. First time he has tried to tell his story.

He was interviewed on the radio here this morning for about 20 minutes. He said this will be the first time he's ever been at midfield for a coin toss, including when he was a player.
There may have been some restriction placed on his parole, having to do with him being within a certain distance of any type of money.
