Why is this A&M team different than 12 and 13?

Since joining the SEC, A&Ms record in conference is a decent but not impressive 11-6. The offense looks stellar but Vegas still had total wins at 7.5 preseason with the likes of Ole Miss and Miss St. Besides the big win over USC, why the sudden change in fortune? Is this your standard week 1 overreaction or will A&M actually contend in the West for the first time?
Out of the six legitimate games left on A&Ms schedule (@State, Miss, @Bama, @Aub, Mizzou, LSU) how many do they win? My prediction is 3-3 to finish 9-3 for 3rd in the West.
Can A&M fans give me the top 3 reasons why the ceiling is higher than this?

They are not any different. Their defense will get exposed. Most likely 9-3, 10-2 at best.

We lost two games in 12 by a combined 8 points. If we draw kentucky instead of Florida, we make it to Atlanta in year 1. Competitive in 3 of our 4 losses in 13 and all of those losses were to ranked teams.

Need some good bounces but I would say 3-3 is the floor with 4-2 or 5-1 being the most likely. Outside chance at 6-0.

1.) Best offense in the SEC
2.) The DL is far surpassing even those who were chugging Maroon Koolaid.
3.) The SEC west has all looked formidable but no one is "unbeatable". That is to say, at this point A&M could beat any team in the SEC west without everyones jaw dropping in disbelief.

1. 2012 A&M recruiting ranking: 15
2. 2013 A&M recruiting ranking: 11
3. 2014 A&M recruiting ranking: 6

Front 7 on defense is significantly better than 2013, and maybe better than 2012. Many of the fish that played (Hall/Walker/Arnold/Mastrogiovanni) are bigger this year, and playing w/ more confidence. And several of the true fish this year (Garrett/Zaycoven Henderson) have been able to step right in. Particularly Garrett, who already has as many Sacks as the 2013 team sack leader had. We also look like we have at least one Safety that can play, Armani Watts.
Add that to a stellar offense, and you have a contender. Not really for an undefeated season, but who is expecting to get out of the West undefeated?

Miles Garrett. He is going to draw double teams against a lot of teams.
I'm shocked he's better than advertised.
Also, Watts likes to hit.
We MAY see what a very good Aggie offense coupled with an average to above average defense can do.

There arsenal of skill players is much bigger and the defense does look somewhat improved.

Aggy won't win another SEC game. They don't have JFF, Mike Evans, or Jake Matthews.

It is not completely out of nowhere since A&M has been recruiting well but sometimes it just happens that a team comes together. Many dominating championship caliber teams were not preseason Top 10 but very early show signs of being special.
Now A&M at this point has not done enough to be directly compared to Championship teams of year past but they have looked very good I’m afraid.
It all comes down to close games. They may not be in many dogfights in the 4th Q, but inevitably they will at very least a 2-3 games. What happens there will determine their fate.

Myles Garrett. Having the best defensive player in the SEC makes a difference.

A better question is what's LSU gonna do now that y'all can quit on them again?

1) maintained high scoring offense
2) much improved defense
3) LSU, Bama have qb problems, Mississippi schools overrated

Offense is still great, less big play potential but more consistently efficient. The difference is that the defense, while young, is significantly more athletic with significantly more skilled bodies at various positions.
It also doesn't hurt that we have the best special teams in the SEC now.

Let me rank the position groups by year:
QB: 2013, 2014, 2012
Can't really rank this year's above a Heisman Winner, but the 2012 QBs were 3 3-star players.
RB: 2014, 2013, 2012
Malena was our LEAST talented back of that group but our best blocker
WR: 2014, 2013, 2012
Evans may be the best receiver out of that group right now, but the sheer volume of pure awesomeness in the current WR group is off the charts.
TE: Tie (all 3)
This is the first year we've actually used the TE effectively under Sumlin and Clear is hurt.
OL: 2014, Tie (2013 and 2012)
2014 is the most talented and deep of the three. Each year has had a top ten pick at LT (Joeckel, Matthews, Obioha)
DT: 2014, 2012, 2013
As great as Damontre Moore was, Myles Garrett and Daeshon Hall are both far more talented right now than he was as a freshman and sophomore. 2013 was just pathetic. FAR deeper at DT and NT as well. Most depth we've had since the 90's
LB: 2012, 2014, 2013
We'll see how well Mastrogiovanni and the young players grow into their roles, but the 2012 LBs had lots of senior leadership. It's very possible for the 2014 group to overtake 2012 and 2013 was just AWFUL
CB: 2014, 2013, 2012
Simply more talented and deep
S: 2014, 2012, 2013
2013 had jack shite at FS. Armani Watts is better as a true freshman than Steven Terrell was as a senior
K: 2014, 2013, 2012
Bertolet hasn't kicked a single PAT or FG since mid-2013.
P: 2013-2014 (tie), 2012
Kaser > Epperson

To put it simply, this is the most talented team Sumlin has ever had. Great O-line, stud receivers, good QB, and a defense that looks like it is tired of being the weak link of the team. They are dangerous, how dangerous who knows? I just hope they don't ruin my Thanksgiving

TAMU has 2 more wins. Rice and SMU. Other games all losses. Outside shot at competing with La Monroe.

The difference is this. Larger mouths. Less talent.
