A rookie OL might struggle this season? Color me shocked.

DJ Fluker sure didn't struggle much and Chance Warmack did very well. Robinson was drafted higher than either so his expectations should be higher.

What would be the ultimate Aubie meltdown is if he moved to OG and Barrett Jones beats him out.

it was assumed he’d play left tackle

Never assumed. He was to play RT and, perhaps eventually, transition to LT.

G.M. Les Snead explained that Robinson may play guard

Probably won't actually play Guard for long, if at all.

quote:

Robinson’s struggles

are they even in pads yet? put the pads on and then come talk to me about "struggles".

quote:

Robinson dealt with a limited range of plays and protections at Auburn

that much is true, but the Rams knew that when they drafted him.

"It is something you have to look at because there have been a host of players out of that Alabama defense that over the years have come in as high draft choices and, frankly, been major disappointments,"

"Is it a trend? Is it one or two? No, it's more than that. You go back to Kareem Jackson, Mark Barron. You look at Dre Kirkpatrick, Rolando McClain and his situation. You look at Terrence Cody. The list goes on and on. There is a concern about that, and it's probably because they're coached up so well and they're in a great system.

"They all complement each other. They come into the league thinking they pretty much are as coached as they can be, and basically they've hit the ceiling. They're good as they're going to get. So there's not that upside that you see with some of the other guys. Maybe that's a factor."
Is it bad of me as a Bama alum to love this quote by Mel Kiper? Personally, I don't give a crap about the NFL. As long as Bama continues to haul in the most talented players in the country, coach and develope them so that they can get an NFL paycheck and in doing so win a ton of football games I just don't care what happens to them after they cash that fat NFL check. I'm fine with our players hitting their ceiling at Bama AND still getting NFL $$$$$.

Warmack struggled a ton as a rookie... he was one of the worst guards in the league last year.

The best LT in the draft was Jake Matthews. He will be a stud and the Falcons can thank the rams for taking Greg Robinson. That being said, Robinson was drafted on potential and is a good run blocker already. He should be decent one day.

Kevin Acee went onto the airwaves this morning as a guest host on AM 1360 and had some insight on things happening at Chargers Park. One of the biggest things that stood out from his appearance were his comments on DJ Fluker.

Acee mentioned that Fluker is having his struggles and there is some people that believe that he would be a better guard. There was already some chatter like that before the draft and now it seems more and more like a possibility.

So now what?!

We keep evaluating and evaluating to see if he can be an NFL right tackle and if he cannot be that guy, then we might have to swallow our pride and make that move. Hopefully they figure it out sooner rather than later.

One of the articles in the morning dump mentioned this possibility already. Fluker would be moved to right guard, Max Starks would be the right tackle and King Dunlap would be the left tackle. Musical offensive linemen!

If Fluker moves to guard, it gives us one more reason to drop Clary onto the unemployment line. Unless we just move him back to right tackle…. but that would just be ridiculous.

Maybe that is why the Chargers have already talked to right tackles Winston Justice and Eric Winston in free agency? They could be options.

Fluker needs to erase all the talk of his struggles. We need the offensive line to step up this year and make things happen.

and Chance Warmack did very well.
quote:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Every insider I've talked to thinks Chance Warmack will be very good player at the very least.

The Titans rookie right guard is very good some of the time already.

But his worst plays are part of what’s creating problems for the Titans on the interior line.

I believe center Rob Turner is the bigger issue and the player-rating website Pro Football Focus agrees. Turner is a minus-7.0 in run blocking and a minus-3.6 in pass protection. Warmack is 0.7 and minus-6.8. Left guard Andy Levitre is minus-1.8 and plus-4.2.

Titans coach Mike Munchak talked about Warmack on The Wake Up Zone in Nashville Tuesday morning:
“I think they all have to play better. It’s not necessarily his technique that’s struggling it’s more of the things that each week is a different challenge with the type of defenses players he’s playing against, not just him but the rest of the group. Decision making with a combination, oh backer ran through. It’s the speed of the game, things where you go, ‘Oh he’s helping too much,’ ‘Oh, he’s not helping enough.'

“On the first third-and-1, he didn’t help the nose tackle enough, he was worried about getting to his linebacker so you don’t get the right fit with him and Rob and all of a sudden we don’t get a first down. The next time he’s helping too much on the down guy and not getting off on the backer. That’s the life of an offensive lineman and really an NFL player up front in the trenches, on offense or defense. He may have five or six plays like that all game like that, out of 70. I can show you the rest of the plays, 60 plays, where you go man, this guy looks pretty darn good and he does.

“But he’s going to have plays like that still that he’s struggling with and he’s not alone when you have four of your six guys up front that are new, including the tight end, you’re going to have some of this happening at times and it’s got to get better.”

DJ Fluker nor Chance Warmack struggled during their respective rookie seasons. You are correct.

Kiper lost a ton of credibility (that he couldn't afford to lose) when he dug his toes in and had Jimmy Clausen as the #4 prospect in 2010 draft. As for the Kiper quote you referenced, he's just plain wrong in so many areas:

quote:

Kareem Jackson

starter at CB in the NFL from day one. If he sucked, then the Texans would find a replacement for him. He was a mid/late first rounder. You draft starters there and that's what he is.
quote:

Mark Barron

NFL starter from day one. he's been anything but a bust.
quote:

Dre Kirkpatrick

jury still out. has started when healthy. closed year with 3 picks in last 4 games. had a pick six in final game. he's progressing.
quote:

Rolando McClain

head case issue. not a talent or over-rated issue. not on Bama.
quote:

Terrence Cody

2nd rounder who plays 50% of the snaps and does what they ask him to do - clog holes. not a star, but not a bust.

The "bust" thing comes from people expecting Bama players to produce in NFL at same level they produced in college. Doesn't always happen that way, but that doesn't make one a "bust".

I laughed openly on this forum when posters proclaimed Greg Robinson would be a first round pick.

Well, they had the last laugh and I ate crow and deserved every bite.

I think the points mentioned in this article are legitimate. The very same points I made prior to the draft. I can't understand how a team uses a left tackle slot for a kid that played in a run oriented offense, and struggled in pass protection.

The Rams obviously have front office issues.

I'm not sure how this discussion turned into an Iron Bowl.

the rams have FO issues b/c they drafted GR in the top 5?

They've held their own in the toughest division in football in fisher's first two years... they just need better QB play (staying healthy would be a good start).
