2008-2013. . Have you been paying attention? We've been in the mix that whole time.
What's changed?
The huge, gigantic question is at QB. I'm a wait-and-see kind of guy. I find it hard to get all jumped up excited about a guy who couldn't win the starting job at another school.
I think if he's average (and SMART with the ball) we'll be a formidable opponent and have a very good win-loss record. If he's above average the rest of y'all are FRICKED. If he doesn't pan out, it'll be a melt of historic proportions from the Bama faithful.
Roll Damn Tide.
The rest? I dunno--seems to me to be a Bama Stacked/SEC Fricked kind of situation.
Having said that, I'd objectively put AU as the favorite. They wrecked shite last year--I expect them to be better, have experience at QB, a year more of experience on the Gus Bus, etc. . .

As others have pointed out Bama is the gold standard for the past 6 years based on everything from their record to championships to draft picks and recruiting classes, etc. Bama also tends to accomplish more when hungry after a disappointing season. The reality is the the WEST and likely the sec will be decided in the iron bowl yet again. Auburn got the lucky bounces last year,so maybe Bama gets them this year in Tuscaloosa.

This is precisely what I'm basing my opinion on. There has been a steady regression from 2011 to 2012 to 2013...and this 2014 team has more question marks than any in the Saban era (besides 2007) that I can recall. The program is certainly not on any kind of upward trend.

Your D doesn't strike fear into people like it used to. Your OL is no longer imposing and proven. Kiffin is your OC.
I could easily be wrong, this is merely my opinion...but it seems like Bama fans are in for a rude awakening in 2014.

How do you define rude awakening? Like 10-3, a top #10 finish and a birth in Cotton Bowl? That's certainly a possibility. There's simply too much talent the roster to have a legitimately bad season. Luckily for Alabama fans we've reached the point where anything but a national championship is considered disappointing. It's exactly where you want your program to be.
Opposing fans love to shite talk and it really is sad what the last 6 years have reduced opposing fan bases to. Teams all around the league are having losing seasons, losing games to scrub teams, coaching turmoil, etc. and the best you can do to try to insult Alabama is point to an 11-2 season with a top #10 finish season?
Seriously, taunts at Alabama these days have been reduced to "HAHA you guys didn't win the national championship this year!"
Have you noticed the only teams to beat Alabama over the last 6 years have pretty much all been top 5 teams?
Alabama is not expecting to win the national championship next year, in case you haven't noticed, none of the national pundits are picking them to, however with a key break or two they'll be right in the mix.
We get it, everyone is sick of Alabama and desperately wanting the nightmare to be over. The sad reality for ya'll is that as long as Saban is at Alabama we're going to be a permanent fixture in the top 10 and more often than not a contender for the national title.

but he doesn't exactly look like a world beater to me either:
I believe with a fair degree of certainly that Bama could line up Yeldon and Henry in the backfield, run a version of the wildcat offense every play all season long and win 9 games or so.
They are effectively a minor league NFL team at this point.

Did this with Ingram to beat South Carolina in 2009, bout wore Mark's arse out.

I would say 3-4 losses would be a rude awakening for a very large portion of the fan base, yes.

Is this implying that finishing outside the top 10 isn't a possibility?

I think if you read my initial post, then you saw exactly who I was speaking to when I criticized the 11-2 team's offense. Also, your schedule was gift wrapped. We both know this. The SEC doesn't get any easier than your set up last year.

The last 6 years have little bearing on how this season will play out. Impressive? Yes. Relevant? Ehh.

This thread wouldn't have been started if I hadn't seen this happen multiple times so far. I literally saw it two nights ago on ESPN.

In a land where people only care about college football (the state of Alabama, I suppose?) this is probably true. I think it's impressive what Saban has accomplished and I respect the program. But that doesn't change how I feel about your team's outlook in 2014.
The topic is simply my opinion on Bama in 2014 and a search for further discussion. I feel like I was pretty spot on for 2013. There are some sensible Bama posters, but everybody saw how a large portion of the fan base reacted to the meltdown in the last two games last year. People were calling Saban an idiot. Calling for different coaches heads. Attacking Cade Foster. It was a laughingstock. Those type of embarrassing reactions and unrealistic expectations make a thread like this quite appropriate IMO.

Whats he done in the last 9 years? I think he was fired from his last job, could be wrong- but I think hes been quite a fail in the last couple of years.

First of all , I explained why I thought Bama deserved and should be a favorite, secondly I just gave my prediction for the season.
I do not think the Sec makes the playoff , I think too many teams have to replace too much, whether they want to admit it or not. And there are too many teams very close at the top of each division, all good ; none great!
I think the eventual champ has at least 2 losses, and that will be too many.
The other conference champs have easier schedules, but records of 12-1 and 13-0. , and conf champ; will out distance the SEC champ of 11-2 or 10-3. Whether or not those teams could actually beat the SEC champ. I just think it's gonna be one of those years.

As much as people think Bama fans are hyping up Coker, other fans are underrating him.
He is the best QB they'll have had under Saban. Athletically and fundamentally he is better than McCarron. With the amount of talent and weapons they have on offense, he's literally a nightmare for defenses.
As for people saying their OL is suspect, the last thing you want is to flush Coker from the pocket. Very fast for his size and capable of extending plays with his legs either through the air or on the ground. Watch spring film and garbage time film all you want, it's all you have to go off of and I get that.
As a former staffer at FSU, I've seen what he can do first hand in practice against a national championship defense. There's not a single defense in the SEC he'll face that is as good as what he practiced against at FSU while he was there. I expect to see an undefeated to 1-loss Bama team win their conference and go to the playoffs this year.

Why so much preseason love for Bama?
The last time Bama was an underdog in a game is the 2009 SEC championship game. Favor in 54 straight games since then.

Weird definition of "solid". By your logic, Auburn is, more often than not, weak.

I think a lot of people around here have forgotten that Bama was 11-0 going into the Iron Bowl last year, and the only win that wasn't by double digits was Texas A&M.
It's not like we struggled all year and dropped a couple in the middle of the season. We had absolutely dominated every team we played - with the exception of Texas A&M.
Auburn scored 2 touchdowns in the last 34 seconds of the game to give us our first loss of the season and keep us out of what would have certainly been a 3rd consecutive national championship appearance.

Yep, people forget how close Bama was to playing for a three peat last year. That's good, will make all the melts even sweeter as we rip their hearts out one by one this season.

2014 Alabama football a modern day Spanish Armada
I think (along with others) that this Alabama program holds the potential for a rather large explosion of unimaginable consequence. I base this rather on personality factors and areas of egomania which will be confined into a single space located on one sideline during a football game.
I call this a recipe for disaster and rangy, a last ditch effort in preventing an assured, forthcoming decline.
(Kiffin + Kirby) < Saban
Bama fans refuse to acknowledge the fact that they are riding into battle (this season) on a powder keg with a short fuse predictably lit early on when Florida comes a calling. Florida is a team who will test the Tide’s metal and if Muschamp & company find a chink in the elephant’s armor that house of cards will fold up like a gypsy circus tent on Sunday.
Aftermath
Alabama may lose its top three coaches this year in an unparalleled egomania of explosions or, they could dominate but, why would Saban take such a risky chance on an OC if one didn't see the fabric unfolding before your eyes?
On paper things look well and infallible but, the SEC could be compared with the English Chanel and best laid plans turn into the unforeseen disaster I feel will happen.
Take this all into account and then go play SEC football with your Spanish Armada Alabama.
Go Dawgs!
