This moment seems to sum up Grantham...

And the words "out of position" or "confused" seem to ring a bell every Monday morning on the radio.

But to be honest, statistically UGA was not at the bottom in the different SEC measurements of defensive play, but rather in the middle.

So he's a box of chocolates... that Georgia fans seem a little too giddy to hand over...

The man is incapable of creating defensive signals by way of a poster board or any other creative manner like unique hand gestures.

His solution, graduate assistants hold towels side of his face. This went on for 3 years, enjoy!

At first I was happy with the hiring of Grantham. After seeing numerous posts about you guys glad to see him go and his stats the past couple of seasons, plus us giving him a million dollar 5 year contract, seems to me we are screwed? Is he as bad as you guys are saying? The ACC does not have the caliber of SEC defenses, so maybe his 3-4 scheme will be good enough in the league.

To be fair to him, we had a good defense in '11, and a solid, but inconsistent, defense last year. This year was a fricking disaster, but I dunno how much of that was or was not on Lakatos as the DBs were easily the worst unit. The man has GOT to learn to fricking substitute though. That alone would greatly improve Grantham's defenses.

Defense.

He knows it.

He really fricking does and yes I know you are being sarcastic. He is fantastic with scheme. The issue is his 50,000 page playbook an inability or simply refusal to simply the playbook and scheme. Nobody will ever get lined up before the snap. We are also horrible on 3rd down.

In the ACC though...I actually see you guys having a lot of success, other than against FSU. Especially against GT, though.

If he'll simplify his D it could be a great hire.

You guys just guaranteed $5MIllion to a guy who had the #78 Scoring Defense and #45 Total Defense this past season, making him a Top 5 paid AC in the NCAA....congratz....

On the plus side, all of your games will be really exciting now. So there's that

Please renege on contract offer and send him back to UGA...please!

He is the DC which had a teamn finish in the 50th range in NCAA stats in 2012 after having 7 defensive players DRAFTED by the pros...you figure it out.

Oh top of that...he is a real POS who had his best moment in the WLOCP back in 2010 or 11 when UF sent out FG kicker at medium range to win game in OT. What did this stellar teacher of young men do? He grabbed his throat on the sideline in plain view of the UF kicker and started pretending to be choking. Nice. You should be so proud of him. Of course he is rabid and got into it with Vandys Franklin and they had to stop sending each other Christmas cards. This is from a DC??? Richt couldn't leash him and used toned down slap on wrist as a rebuke.

Grantham tremendously improved Georgia's defense while he was there. They finished in the top 10 in total defense his first three years, while they struggled to replace key players this year and finished #45, which was still better than the year prior to him taking over. Not sure he's worth that much money, but he isn't a bad defensive coordinator. Just didn't have smart enough players this year to understand an extremely complex defense.

To be honest, it's very confusing.

In 2010 when bama fans were just a teeny tiny bit nervous that smart might leave, Grantham was a name that kept getting brought up. Grantham had prior work experience with saban, and he was the hot name people were throwing around saban would go after.

He's got lots of NFL experience, and turned our D around from absolute garbage in 2009, to alright in 2010, to pretty decent in 2011. I have no explanation for why the wheels fell off after that. This was statistically teh worst defense in UGA history this year. Every snap half the defense was looking to the sidelines confused. We didn't play with fundamentals, were out of position, and just sucked in general. I really have no reason why.

Maybe he just needed a new start. Hopefully things work out for him/yall.

I think some of it had to do with youth. I would argue that our 2011 defense and 2012 defense with the talent was rather disappointing.

Most fans act happy when a coach leaves, kind of a stage of denial. In this case UGA fans are genuinely thrilled, and they should be. Grantham lacks class and couldnt field really good defenses with 4 and 5 star players...and uganfans were stuck with him unless some idiot came along and let them off the hook.

Thanks louiseville. Assholes.

What I could never get over was watching our defensive players looking over to the sideline every other play, confused out of their skulls, wondering what to do, while the other team was hiking the ball.

This happened every. single. season that Grantham coached in Athens. It was almost surreal at times how bewildered our players looked at the start of plays. And at the end of plays too, come to think of it.

I like stability in the coaching staff, but this probably had to happen, so ...

I might derail this thread a little, but oh well.

This I can't defend.

Now this, if you knew half the story you would understand why he did it. It started because Franklin came after a PLAYER. (sorta like that S&C coach you guys have, maybe you should leash him, but that's for a different day)I defend Grantham's rights to defend his players. Kind of like you wouldn't discipline another man's child in front of them, that's what Franklin did.

Bobby Petrino is your HC. You weren't going to recruit defensive players anyway. This hire won't really have much of an impact on your defensive performance either way.
