The scary thing about Florida in the mid-90s is that they were dominating the SEC...but were still only the third best team in the state.

2nd best. After 92 Miami started falling off. Everything from there on out was UF and FSU.

So you think LSU will repeat this year?

Mettenberger has some proving to do first I know he played some JUCO not sure how much he played at UG but I would not put all my money on him just coming into this role on the team and being a leader for your offense!
If he has a pulse, it will be an upgrade.

I doubt anyone is going to repeat Alabama's run of the 1970s, but I think someone could certainly win back-to-back conference titles again.

I think you hit the nail on the head. The game is so different now compared to then. The biggest change is the scholarship limitations placed on programs coupled with the fact that virtually all SEC programs have at least decent national exposure.

If you look at the SEC since the end of the 70's you will note that primarily the conference has two tiers. The top tier is Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, LSU and Tennessee. One of these six teams has been the conference champion every year since Kentucky shared the title with Georgia in 1976. Then there is the second tier of the conference. There you have Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Mississippi State, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. While some of these teams will have what most would consider good season and even good runs of seasons, especially Arkansas, they never find themselves atop the conference at the end of a season.

Now, having established the hierarchy of the conference you can look at the records since the end of the 70's and see that even though there are the same six who usually sit atop the conference, they move places quite frequently. Each of the big six will cycle through times where they are the dominant team for a period and then inevitable fall off for a time to be replaced by another "Big Six" team. And in a few years that team will fall off to be replaced by another of the Big Six.

So to answer the original question... no, no one SEC team can dominate the conference, at least not for more than a few years. However, without fail, the same six teams have dominated the conference every single year for the past 36 years in a row.

Proving what? That he's no worse than Jordan Jefferson? How hard could that be?

I think the oversigning coming to an end really allows this to happen. If you believe that oversigning has an affect, which you should, then you realize its elimination makes the margin for error, much much much smaller. A good coach, a few stellar recruits, a little luck, you can do it for sure.

And my definition of dominated is winning the SEC anywhere from 3 in a row to 4 out of 7. 5 out of 8 being magical.

Hard for him since he couldn't beat Jefferson out for playing time while both were on the roster...

I still don't get Miles' stubborn insistence on scheming the offense around JJ, I don't think anyone will.

After the abysmal performance against Bama was finally over with, Mettenberger said that he knows its his team now.

That right there is an improvement over Jefferson.

Just wait until the Aggies get up in this beyotch. After not dominating ANYTHING in the past 20 years, the A&M will dominate the SEC for 3 years in a row.

Book it. Bet the farm. All in.

I am not sure the mid-90's really goes to one team over the other if we are talking 1993 to 1996/7.

UF was 2-3-1 against them over that stretch (3-3-1 if you include 1997).

UF was 45-6-1; NC in 1996, lost NC in 1995
FSU was 43-5-1; NC in 1993, lost NC in 1996

This from a LSU fan. With what bama signs 2-2 and the leadership they have coming back, a qb who knows how to win(see 1-9-12),never count Saban out. He is a different coach than the one who lost to AU at home when Cam took his sack lunch.
If Les can learn from 1-9 and Mett show leadership we stand a good chance. Piggies have a leaky ship and will finish 3rd in the west.
Ps. Saban had 8 early guys who started school in Jan.

No team can dominate the SEC?

True statement??...................Yes

Possibly.
But, can one conference dominate the NCAA?
I would say yes. The SEC has won 8 of the last 14 national championships, including 7 of the last 9 and 6 in a row.

for how long? lsu dominated the sec in the regular season this year. auburn dominated last year. bama dominated the year before. but, if you are defining dominate as in the past a la bear bryant or general neyland, it's not gonna happen, esp in football. too many programs putting too much money into facilities, recruiting and facilities. cycles are the name of the game. did you not learn that in the years between bryant and saban? except for a few yrs under stallings, a period where bama got caught red handed buying players, y'all were pretty mediocre.
