Curious to Auburn fan's thoughts on switching to the 3-4 defense.

I know Chizik is a 4-3 guy, but wondered what y'all thought if he hired a 3-4 guy, provided Roof gets deservedly fired, to implement a change. Richt did it a couple years ago and it appears to be paying dividends.

Not an Auburn fan, but consider that you don't have the personnel for the 3-4 and switching would put you in direct competition with Alabama AND Georgia for a limited amount of players. I'm not so sure that would be a wise move on Auburn's part.

Bad idea. 4-3 has way more players available that fit the system. The 3-4 will begin to fail for more teams once more people go to that system.

Would take a while for our defense to adjust to that... I'd stick with the 4-3 and get a guy that's more familiar with a Chizik style defense.

It's a superior defense, IMO. It would be a lot better against the run and would allow us to drop more into coverage on 3rd and long. I would be excited about a change to the 3-4.

I prefer the 3-4, but you absolutely have to have the correct personnel.

We switched. It's been a painful process.

I don't know if that's the right move, especially since most Auburn fans are expecting a quick fix.

It would take at least 2 years for the switch, Auburn has a lot small fast players on defense. Glancing at the depth chart right now, none of the 6 LBs in the 2 deep would be great fits for the 34. Hell, Auburn's best potential 34 LB might be playing DE right now.

Bama only suffered for 1 year converting because Saban is a defensive mastermind, UGA has a big enough reserve of top talent from their talent rich state to mask the inexperience in the system.

Auburn doesn't have either right now, so it wouldn't the best move to switch. It would have to be a uber slow switch to it, but that would still mean it would be a year or two before it paid off...

No, need to stick with the 4-3. Get a new DC that can coach LBs or DBs and get a new assistant that can coach the other. Chiz needs to keep his hands off of it and let them do their thing. I fricking hate Chiz's bend but don't break Tampa 2 shite.

We need a good mix of player's coaches and hard asses. We have no hard arse on the staff and it shows.

Its not like a 3-4 defense does not work. yall don't need to change. yall just need some better coaching IMO.

Paying Cam and Fairley to come back would help. Milton is free now, make that shite happen.

The 3-4 is not the end all, be all defensive scheme. With the right personnel, but with the right personnel and coaching, the 4-3 is just as effective. We have the team to run the 4-3, but the coaching hasn't been up to par on the defensive side.

His Tampa 2 had top 20 defenses from 2001-2006.

I've never heard or seen a Roof defense break the top 20.

I think it should be pointed out, once again, that Bama is only in our base 3-4 package about 16% of the time.

I'm not sure what Auburn's number is, I would guess around 40% or so.

It doesn't matter what you run. Auburn doesn't have the players right now.

Not in favor, I'd prefer we just build up our 4-3 talent. The 4-3 works for a million teams, we just need more talent/experience on defense.

Wasn't long ago that our secondary was the strength on our team. Just gotta get that talent.

Both schemes are equally effective with the right players and good coaching.

Auburn would be doing themselves a huge disservice by doing a 180 midstream. You have been recruiting good players for a 4-3. A lot of them probably aren't capable of playing a position in the 3-4 though. You would basically be setting yourselves back 2 years in the hopes of a long term perceived benefit that isn't really much of a benefit at all. Auburn's first order of business in the offseason needs to be a complete overhaul of the defensive staff.

If Auburn was to change next season, the D would look something like...

DE - Gabe Wright
DT - Jeff Whitaker
DE - Angelo Blackson

LB - Corey Lemonier
LB - Jawara White
LB - Kris Frost
LB - Craig Sanders

CB - Chris Davis
CB - Jermaine Whitehead
S - Demetruce McNeal
S - Erique Florence

And, I'm not trying to argue with anyone, but it isn't ALWAYS a hard transition for teams. I won't say it would be easy for us (because, well, look at us), but some teams make the transition easily. The Denver Broncos (granted, they are a NFL team and can sign players) made the transition pretty good in Josh McDaniel's first season before the wheels came off the bus. The Packers also made it pretty good a couple years back.
