Who would you say was better on paper coming into the season?

I'd say Bama. They won the National title the next year, so when people say they had flashes of greatness, they weren't kidding. Alot of people knew Bama was close to getting to the top in 08, they just lacked a few pieces of the puzzle, not to mention the fact they had a coach that is loved and wanted. 10 LSU, not so much on the loved and wanted part.

Hard to say at this point since we know Bama became a damn good team, SECCG and the Sugar Bowl notwithstanding. LSU is ranked about the same spot in the preseason poll that Bama was in '08, though.
I'd say LSU right now, until Les forgets where he put that paper.

Bama had a solid senior QB and a very good coach.
LSU, questionable QB and Les.

Coming into the season, I would say LSU had more developed talent. However, Bama had JPW and Saban where LSU has JJ and Miles.

I'd argue that Bama 08 was not significantly better than Bama 07 just more consistent. In 08 Bama caught a way down SEC, not to mention a drastically SECW.

Most people expected Bama to finish 3rd in the West with probably an 8-9 win season in 08.
Most people expect LSU to finish anywhere from 2-4 in the west this year and a 7-10 win season.
I think the biggest difference is, LSU has a higher perceived ceiling and lower floor than Alabama

LSU.
Bama was coming off a 7-6 season and noone predicted they'd run the table and almost win the SECCG.
LSU has much more talent now, than Bama did then.

This isn't really valid because you are using what you know to make your pick. In other words you have to make your pick as if you didn't know Bama won the national title in 2009. We have no idea about LSU and what they will accomplish this season...
But to answer the question I would say talent wise it would probably be LSU...but that pick is based solely on the talent level.

LSU'10. Bama had a bunch of unknowns and several Freshman to start. It wasn't expected that they'd do what they did. As for LSU, there are fewer unknowns, but some of those need to be corrected or used mo bettah like Jefferson's skill set.

Julio Jones, Cody, Ingram,ect.. Nobody could have predicted that class to come in and contribute like that.

LSU '10
Bama '08 really overachieved considering the talent on that team.

I think they are very similar, aside from coaching.

On paper? Probably LSU '10.
But there are so many other factors involved.....You just gotta have luck on your side for it all to come together.

LSU. Outside of Andre Smith, all of the top players on '08 Bama were very, very young or inexperienced. And quite frankly, '08 Bama was a very average team without Andre Smith. Without him, we were dominated at home by a horrible Tulane team (got outgained by like 200 yards and couldn't get anything going on offense) and everybody knows about the Utah debacle. It was a travesty that Smith wasn't invited to New York as a Heisman Trophy candidate that year. There wasn't a more valuable player in college football.
