As announced this morning, Gustav Malzahn has retired from coaching.
One part of the famed Barner Boom Brothers, he sunk into the depths of shite after completely losing control of the program. After a mediocre stint at UCF, he was hired by Free Shoe U to be the OC, contributing to a stunning 5-7 steamer of a season for the Seminoles.
Not only did he create the chain of events that created the muckfire that is Auburn, he singlehandedly changed the FSU offensive scheme (again), which will undoubtedly have massive effects on the program for years to come, as no one in their fricking right mind wants to play for that shite.
What a sad day for the rest of college football.
Also prayers up for Alabama, they just lost their daddy

And prayers for the Hog fans who are now seeing reality set in that he’ll never be their head coach.

He had some medical issues. They’ve known for quite a while he was going to retire

I thought Gus had died for a second.

I remember when Houston Nutt hired him from Springdale to get all their players like Mitch Mustain and they were going to open up the offense. They promptly started running the wildcat.

If you had DMac, Jones, and Hillis would you throw it around the lot. There I fixed it for you.

Probably still try to keep it somewhat balanced to keep the defense honest. Didn't most of the Springdale guys transfer out after that season?

Only Mustain and Williams. Mustain sat the bench at SC for. 3 years. Williams had some success.

I feel he was a better coach than his legacy will remember. Definitely an innovator.

I gotcha. I always thought that it was Nutt who wanted to abandon the pass, but Gus was never one to throw the ball alot around after he got a head coaching job either. I thought Arkansas was going to have a Mike Leach type offense after y'all hired Gus.
Those 3 RB's were one of the best all time backfields in NCAA history.

Seriously though, I hope his health is ok.

If I were a rich college football coach, I think I would've retired already with the NIL and portal bullshite.

He should have stayed in Arkansas.
AState or UofA.
AState would be pouring foundations for his statues today.
UofA would have been winning 8 games a year and still be relevant.

Bubba, that's not exactly what happened at all, in reality.
Arkansas was running ***direct snap to the best athlete*** when they were doing it with Matt Jones - "quarterback" or not. Matt Jones in pre-2004, or DMAC after that, didn't matter, it was a direct snap to the best athlete and all the wrinkles in any year there still meant the offense had gained an extra blocker by the QB running the ball.
And guess who was copying them while at Springdale High? Gus was. Springdale TV/radio announcers were even saying "Mustain is running the same stuff that Matt Jones runs at Arkansas."
Then he got hired as OC at Arkansas and the media and Springdale boosters floodgates opened, screaming that "Gus invented the Wildcat"
He did not.
What sends the Gus boys and Springdale into a rage (and our local media), is knowing that Houston Nutt and his offensive staff created all that before Malzahn got there.
One little case in point about Malzahn just today...he waited until Monday to announce his retirement so he could get maximum attention. With Gus, it was always about Gus. He was loyal to no one
