Why is the National Championship game not tomorrow?

I’d actually prefer that the it be played on New Year’s Day, but if they’re not going to do that, at least put it on a Saturday. They do this with college basketball too. ESPN or whoever’s insistence at putting college sports’ biggest games on a random Monday night is really stupid.
The NFL plays the Super Bowl on a Sunday because that’s when NFL games are played.

Because they don't want to go up against the NFL.

TV networks and scheduling associated with NFL playoffs
It should be tonight instead

Then end the season before the NFL playoffs start.

For the same reason why the PGA Tour starts winding down as soon as the NFL starts. Go head to head with the NFL and you'll lose every time.

NFL playoffs would dwarf ratings hugely

CFB decision makers need to grow a pair and tell the networks that if they want to air our playoff / championship, they are going to do it on our schedule.
First round games were fine with one game on NYE and three games on NYD… and ratings were great.
Semifinals should have both been played on Saturday, 1/10. One in the afternoon slot and one in the evening slot.
Championship should be Saturday night, 1/17.
If it goes head-to-head with the NFL, so be it. NFL playoff games would draw more viewers, but I think executives would be surprised at how many CFB fans would choose the CFB games. I bet NFL would win 60-40 or something like that.

Should definitely be tonight if they aren’t going to go up against NFL. No one wants to have to stay up super late on a Monday night.

College football needs to figure it out. Conference championship games don't need to be a thing anymore. Frist round can be that weekend and get the championship back on New Year's Day. It won't happen because we'll be a 16 teams soon and the Rose Bowl acts like bitches about playing on any other day.

I have not watched a national championship game since Georgia played in it. Too late on a Monday night for me.
Not that anyone cares.

Because MLK was a huge college football fan and they want to honor him.

NFL would be larger only because it draws massive viewers from giant markets like NYC and LA, but those markets don’t watch CFB games… so why does it matter?
USA’s largest TV markets:
1. New York
2. Los Angeles
3. Chicago
4. Dallas
5. Philadelphia
6. Houston
7. Atlanta
8. Washington DC
9. Boston
10. San Francisco
Outside of Dallas, Houston, and Atlanta, the CFB Playoff is barely drawing a rating in any of those other 7 largest markets. Whether they aired on Thursday night or Saturday head to head with the NFL, it probably doesn’t matter all that much. The number of viewers would be small either way.
In Dallas, Houston, and Atlanta… and certainly in the diehard CFB markets like Birmingham, Columbus, New Orleans, Oklahoma City, etc. the majority of CFB viewers are still going to choose the college game regardless if the NFL playoffs are going on.
The loyal CFB viewer who turns on the the big games all season long… we’re talking 10-30 million people… they are going to choose CFB every time unless it’s their local NFL team playing and the CFB playoff team doesn’t involve their team.
Not airing games head to head is more about protecting the NFL ratings than it is about the CFB viewership.
There are millions of viewers in Birmingham, Columbus, OKC, etc who turn the TV on to watch an NFL game simply because it’s on… not really caring much about what they are watching. Those fans are gone from the NFL if a CFB playoff game is on at the same time.

Monday is dumb, not a Holiday for most, people leaving work early to race home and catch the game west of the Mississippi.
Should of course be January 1st, or at least any day where CFB has its own no work all day affair like the NFL has Super Bowl Sunday...hmm? Saturday? What a novel concept!
Plus, this Season and Playoffs should be long over.
This isn't the NBA.

Agree. And in the big 2026 everyone has multiple displays. Put your preferred game on the big screen

It should absolutely be Friday or Saturday. Garbage that it’s on Monday, especially if your team is playing in it and even more so if you’re attending it.

Because the playoffs now have a gazillion teams in it and as it keeps growing this game will keep being pushed forward.
Folks that demanded the change won't be happy until we're watching the title game in March. We can tune into the Final Four and kickoff for the CFP title game on the same day!
Woo.
