This is NOT a meltdown...but as we all know, our portal class has left MUCH to be desired....are we really just getting out bid by everyone?

Do we have bigtime oil money like then Texas schools where we could write blank checks? No. But we have money to be competitive and should be yielding better results than what we’re seeing in the portal thus far.

Call it what you like. No one can compete with billionaire boosters. I think Alabama is just trying to survive at this point.

Let's not get all bent out of shape before we see the final product.

There's enough for anyone who knows what he's doing to build a team. We aren't the Yankees and we need to stop trying to out-Texas the Texas schools; it's just a recipe for failure. Thus far, there's very little evidence the sheer amount of money has any impact on wins/losses, especially with wide receivers.
The portal absolutely creates a false demand in a lot of instances

This is what should be focused on. Everyone is trying to adapt right now and I think we have the makings of the staff to do it.

Everyone? No. We have money, more than most. We're likely a top-15 type program as far as funding for players is concerned.
We don't have elite money with multiple billionaire alumni willing to write checks for us like a few schools. But realistically, there are only 5-7 schools that can sustain like that.
The next phase, much like what the University of Utah is doing will be either partnerships or direct buyouts of programs by private equity groups. If we go that direction, we still have a top-5 brand and should command a good deal of money.
We are slow-walking (okay maybe running) into an era of pseudo ownership of college sports. Most of the billionaires pumping money into schools aren't multi-billionaires that can buy a professional franchise, so they are making a move in college sports. At some point with these folks they are going to want either control of the organization or financial ROI. This is a strange era and I fear the next steps are going to be even more unpalatable.

Ultra rich and abke to compete with those few achools that are? No
Enough to compete with a majority of schools? Absolutely, but
The concerns within the program are much deeper. If they are not adequately addressed, the significant marginal money will disappear.

We are supposedly in the top 10 among NIL collectives but who knows if that is accurate.

This. “Texas and A&M are outspending us” is a convenient excuse to paper over real realities within the football building.

I fear they may have thought they could make a splash but brought small bills and a knife to a gunfight that in 2026 requires large bills and a .357 magnum.
I think we are going to have to play moneyball in the long term and I don’t know how great our chances will be against the competition we face. What Indiana is doing isn’t all a hardass coaching 2 stars up, remember Mark Cuban is writing checks.

This really isn’t a DeBoer thing. Bama’s mystique is much lower than everyone else.

We are 60th in the portal ranking at the moment.15th in the SEC. You really think we’re that poor?

the devil is in the details. This staff apparently doesnt pay attention to detail.
Even if they are not using one of the most valuable resources they have access to, others are.

quote:Catchy phrasing but what details have they missed exactly and how do you factor in the inputs from the University and from the boosters? I assume, of course, that we are discussing portal issues and not on the field performance?
