Dumb that he’s having to apologize to people who don’t even know what the game is.
“Queer” means strange or odd. In “smear the queer,” the guy with the ball is the odd one - the only person with a ball, and the goal is to knock the shite out of him and get the ball to become the next “queer” & see how long you can last.

There was always the one kid no one liked and instead of throwing the ball in the air you’d just toss it to them and they’d get gang tackled and then quit playing. They call it bullying today. It was killing two birds with one stone in the early 90s.

In my neighborhood we called it TTMWTB (tackle the man with the ball), and we'd absolutely level the shite out of each other. We played in this guy's yard that never stayed at his house as he was in Florida 90% of the year. Absolutely wrecked that yard/grass. Not that we were against 'smear the queer', but not sure why we called it what we did.

when i was in grade school back in the 90s, we had a substitute teacher that was about 80 years old. She called all the strange kids queer, right to their faces.

It was a pretty common and perfectly acceptable word to use to describe something weird until the gay community adopted a word that meant strange as their sexual identity.
