UGA looking to set new legal precedent in portal case

Just read a good explanation from one of the UGA beat writers on UGA’s position: he said essentially that UGA had a significant amount of money set aside and agreed to for Wilson to come back. He signed the contract then pulled the rug, too late for UGA to do anything in that window, and it left UGA in a really tough to impossible spot with signing day and the portal window closed once he bailed. So no chance to replace him on the roster.

Interesting to note the journalistic tone being set on this, the word “sue” is not uttered.
UGA has filed a lawsuit to sue Damon Wilson for breach of contract and liquidated damages.
The PR on this *could* be awful: A big, bad institution is suing an individual. A student! Someone from potentially a disadvantaged background! Someone with nowhere near the level of understanding UGA has about contracts and legal duties.
Sounds like ESPN either has a bias to not bite the hand that feeds them (a successful cornerstone football program), or has a bias as to which side the moral merit lies (implying UGA).
Good for UGA, and good for contract case law precedent. As for CFB, one more step down the pathway to it being just a business.
Having said all that, no way the $390k claim stands. LDs will be limited to money paid, plus an interest rate, and maybe legal fees. How in the world can you measure lost earnings to an entire program from 1 individual not fulfilling their NIL duties?

I have a feeling he is just paying back that 30k plus maybe some court fees. Maybe UGA's legal fees if they are lucky.

Going to be an uphill battle to convince a court that it's reasonable to expect $390,000 because a player left after you had paid them $30,000.
Maybe, but it's a tough sell to claim Wilson leaving resulted in that type of harm. Wilson didn't take all that money with him. The collective still had it in their bank account and likely spent it on a different player.

Kids went from not getting paid outright to demanding money and having no accountability when they just leave for another school. Maybe it’s time to grow up and be with the school you signed with.
