He should’ve been a top candidate from the very start.

They should be thanking their lucky stars they could still get him after signing like 2 recruits. PSU got way too big for their britches

Have always found him to be a little overrated, but not a terrible get there.

There are threads about this on Iowa State boards saying ESPN is reporting it, must be happening.

Are Cyclone fans good with it or not?

Cyclone fans have no say and for the most party they’re pretty mid historically

Boy they really fumbled and stumbled into a solid hire if that’s the case.

I think he's one of those guys that is hard to project to a place where there are players and infrastructure built in. He has done incredible stuff at Iowa State, which I think has kind of been forgotten by most because he has been there so long.

I think I had read that they had NEVER had back to back winning seasons before he got there. He's gone to a bowl and had a winning record 8 of the last 9 seasons. That's an extremely impressive run at a place with absolutely zero consistent history. However, outside of the 2020 season, they've finished ranked 1 time (last year) and won more than 8 games 1 time (last year).

So the question is, how much better is he at a place with better athletes and more resources? The easy answer is "well better obviously!", but we know that is not the way it always turns out. Some guys have systems and methods that are made for places with low expectations where you can develop kids, maybe have an off year where it doesn't work, create a team that does everything you want but isn't quite talented enough to be better than pretty good. And that method falls apart when applied to more elite athletes/players/etc.

So who knows. But given the situation they are in and that he is like #9 on the call sheet they should be pretty happy.

He's won CoY like 3 times at Iowa State, which is incredible. He is easily their greatest coach of all time. I suspect he will do very well at Penn State. He's never been anywhere where he's been given even remotely close to the resources he will have there. I've wanted the dude at Arkansas ever since he beat us at frickin Toledo when we went into the game ranked #18.

He doesn't have an agent and wouldn't interview during the regular season, so during the start of the search he wouldn't have been an option.

Lucky for Penn State if this is true.

I like Matt Campbell. Hope he does well at Penn State and becomes a thorn to other B1G teams’ asses.

Dumb, first ISU should have just paid him two, he could do far better by waiting. PSU Ad and fans are straight trash.

Iowa State is broke. They've got around a $150MM funding gap. Campbell took a pay cut a few years back to give money to his staff.

I'm sure he's ready to go somewhere that he doesn't have to worry about funding anymore.

Penn State backed in to a good coach somehow. Problem is had they done this sooner they wouldn’t have a complete black hole for recruiting this year. That will be hard to overcome.

While true....

It is interesting that Earle Bruce, Johnny Majors, and even freakin' Pop Warner all coached at Iowa State.

Jim Walden was a pretty good coach for them... And they also had Chizik there for a big.
