re: Odds for Nico Iamaleaving's Next Team...UCLA the favorite...

There aren't many gimme's.
New Mexico and Northwestern are probably easy dubs, but that's a lot of 35/65s or 40/60's. They'll get some. I thought they were looking a little salty after the murderer's row run in the 1st half of their season, but that's a struggle for 6-6 unless they really pull something out of their arse.
You're right though. 4-8 is far, far more likely than 8-4. My B.

They actually kind of came on last year and were sort of scrappyish. Sort of. Like they sucked, but they won a few at the end.
They had a 5 game run of Indiana, @LSU, Oregon, @Penn State, Minnesota that was about as rough a stretch as you're gonna see, and then won 4 of the last 6. So maybe there's hope for not getting murdered. But they're probably gonna lose. I could see 8-4ish though if their defense is good.

Like college baseball would be a lot more fun if traditional powerhouses started like ASU started acting like it again. I was there when they were still pretty good, but even then it felt like they'd slid from the constant National Contender days.

For a finals match, yeah. And it's the biggest overall in a long time too. Maybe since Karelin lost.

This was the biggest upset in real wrestling probably since Gardner beat Karelin. It's enormous.
Also, if Gable keeps at it, and it sounds like he will, he is going to fricking incinerate everyone he faces going forward for at least a year or two.
I thought it was funny that he was in college wrestling again, but hey. He'd been out. Not exactly his peak. Now he's gotta take that black eye on what was basically supposed to be a ceremony for crowning him the US's best HW ever. Hoping it gets him going and he takes down the Olympics again next time.

Gable fricking Steveson being back in college wrestling is both hilarious and dumb. Like sure, get the money, get back into shape for the next Olympics or the career in being punched in the face if he goes MMA, but it feels like he's picking on children to be wrestling college kids at this point. Like he has eligiblity, he isn't outlandishly overaged for college wrestling but...
He was the best wrestler in the world*. In the world. In 2022. Got a gold medal.
*not doing pound for pound, in 2022 it was Sadulaev for sure. But if you put Sadulaev and Steveson on a mat in 2022, Gable's almost certainly winning.
If the Oklahoma State kid beat him, it would be one of the biggest upsets of all time.

re: Johnny Bench was 84-3 as a HS Pitcher & had only caught 17 games when drafted by Reds.

Instead they got 4 years of Chris "Reggie Ball before Reggie Ball" Rix.

Well I'll be damned. Turns out people wanted to watch the big games.
Or is it a weird flex that the SEC championship game came in after the championship, the semifinals and the best games of the quarterfinals?

There were a lot of wild stories about Joe Mauer when he was in high school, too, though he played a lot more catcher than Bench apparently did. He was also a pitcher and was throwing in the 90s, and, famously, only struck out one time in his high school career. #1 pick in the draft.
Baseball might not even have been his best sport, since he was the national player of the year in baseball AND football. #1 recruit at QB, athletic at 6'5" or 6'6", huge arm. Bobby Bowden allegedly held a scholarship open for him until he made the pros hoping to pull a Weinke (Weinke and Mauer went to the same high school, as did Steve Walsh for Miami).
Oh, also All State basketball.
Pretty good argument that he was the most dominant high school athlete ever in the big 3.

John Henry Johnson is another FB in the Hall.
Alstott is really the only one I think you could make an argument for that isn't just trying to give out charity gold jackets.

I want to say 2019 LSU, but you're obviously just looking for someone to dick ride your team.
So I'll go with 1995 Nebraska. Absolutely dominating.
Shutting their folks up the next year was so much fun. Whooped ASU's arse 77-28. Then we blanked 'em 19-0 in the follow up.

If high school athletes were marketable just for being good, you'd see retail focused entities getting involved.
I don't see Target or Walmart or Best Buy or CostCo (or whoever) involved right now.
It's just people with money buying teams.

There is one player on the entire 2 deep that played for Herm Edwards.

Seeding is iffy. ASU was the 12 seed. There were not 11 better teams than ASU. There weren't 11 teams with better resumes either.
If you want to clean house, you need to get rid of preseason prejudice.

Fear.
Targeting is a kind of a bad penalty. I don't really like it. Too many people have to sit out a half for something that isn't controllable. Flipside, its purpose is to protect players from getting knocked the frick out when they can't defend themselves.
And Stovall was laid out on the ground for a minute there. If you're making penalties to keep people from head injuries, like... Call the ones that cause head injuries.

A series of unfortunate coaching hires. Guys that don't really get the job or do what it takes to win.
Dirk Koetter was a phenomenal offensive mind, but he wanted to be in the NFL. He fricking hated recruiting. He got what he wanted, albeit after being fired.
Dennis Erickson was there for one last hurrah and a pay check. Had the credentials obviously, but the program ran wild. It was just athletes vaguely following the advice of coaches who were indifferent.
Todd Graham almost figured it out, but he had two major issues- Kind of a weird, telemarkety dude. Folks don't really like him. Great eye for coaching talent. His coaching tree is outstanding. Two, he couldn't get over that he's a Texas HS coach first. He didn't put much priority on recruiting SoCal and you have to do that to win at ASU. It's right next door. He wanted to recruit Texas, and be the 3rd or 4th or 5th guy in line. Then all of a sudden there wasn't a Will Sutton on his defensive line anymore.
Herm and Antonio Pierce brought in a ton of talent, but Herm wanted to coach like it was the NFL. They should have brought in an OC who would let their talent blow the doors off people, but they were happy with slow, grindy games. Ton of guys who were good players, but they were shackled.
Dillingham is the first guy in a long time that really gets what ASU is. He's from there. He knows the DNA of the school. They've done a great job finding talent that isn't just obvious 4 and 5 star guys. They really look for guys in the portal who have multiple years of eligibility left like they're supplementing their high school recruiting more than filling holes. Their big jump is when they can get in a higher end DL and OL. And they play like fricking dogs, man. That team plays hard and it wasn't just the Texas game.

Agreed. Texas hit ASU with a haymaker right off the bat and despite dominating time of possession and outgaining UT by 150 yards, it was from behind until the end. Took them a while to get it going.
But that's kind of the nature of this. ASU had time to get healthier. Would have been cool if Tyson was ready to be back, but broken collarbone isn't a 4 week injury. Time to recover versus being in rhythm.
End of the day, Texas won fair and square. They made the plays.

The 4/5 game went to double OT. That's what you want your 4/5 game to look like.

He only half-joked about holding student tryouts for a kicker during the season. Kicking situation is bad and dictates some of their calls.
They went and got a guy in the portal though.
