As of December 2, 2025, Durkin's future at Auburn remains undecided but leans toward retention in some capacity, likely as defensive coordinator. During his introductory press conference on December 1, Golesh addressed the question directly:"The defensive side, I'm working through it. We've got a plan. We're working through steps to execute the plan. My hope is that in the next 24 to 48 hours, that that gets finalized and we have some clarity with which direction we're going, but we’re working through it."
This suggests a decision could come as early as December 2-3, 2025. Auburn has actively lobbied candidates to retain Durkin to preserve roster continuity, as his defenses have been key to player retention amid portal speculation. Sources indicate Golesh plans to meet with Durkin on December 2 to discuss options, though reports are mixed on Durkin's long-term interest—some say he wants to stay (as HC or DC), while others note he could explore head coaching elsewhere.

Its going to be hard to keep him. He has to have some bad feelings over what happened the last few games
its like staying with a girl who cheated on you. Just hard to get past what happened to move forward

A stunning offense with Durkin's defense would be a hell of a combination. Maybe sweeten the deal.

I’ve read his feelings aren’t hurt nor does he have sour grapes. He simply has a decision to make.

He should have known that he wasn't getting the job. Dude is getting no hits to be a HC right now. AU would have been his only hope. He may be POed about how it went down but he is getting paid very well. If he wants to leave for another job then fine but I think if he were to stay and then if we get to play for the natty in the next couple of years then he will get some looks.
He has that stigma hanging around his neck right now so folks may not be touching him for that.

No sour grapes, but does he have an axe to grind or a bone to pick?

I dont know. He is already one of the highest paid coordinators in the country and the vast majority of the fanbase wants him to stay on. He has a lot of talent in his defense that love playing for him. The only way he could really advance his career right now is getting a head coach job somewhere, but I dont think anyone is beating down his door to hire him.
If he can stay out his feelings his situation is great at the moment.

He's probably not happy with the HC decision but he wasn't mislead and I'm sure he knows that.

Nothing was mentioned about axe grinding and bone picking, so I can’t attest to those.

Much respect but no one cares about some dumb shite you copy and pasted from a shitty AI. No offense, this is just the worst trend going right now.

quote:It seems he's being given a pretty big slice of time to decide, considering how fast everything else is at the moment. That's not really pushing him out, but saying this i how I'm doing things, and you've got a little time to decide. Which is a pretty fair shake or way to start a partnership. A bit slow but ... i LIKE IT.

My feelings have been hurt for quite a while and I have stayed a fan, why can’t Durkin just take it too?

This is most likely it. There have been a lot of openings this cycle and, while most now are G5, I'm sure he and his agent are testing the water. I don't fault him for that at all but he's paid well so he may decide to wait another year or so.
ETA: I guess I just repeated what goose said.

You asked Grok for information on a coach's future?
You know Grok hallucinates, right?

My read on CAG body language from his durkin question is that he will not be retained. Immediately looked up and to the right which indicates lying usually when asked about Durkin. After that he almost frowned a little bit and said we would soon know. Another tell that he’s isn’t going to be back
I also made that up, but if we’re doing AI, then why not just make shite up too?

With all of the demands of being a HC, it doesn't leave him enough time to be a great DC. That showed up in the last three games.
