The fallout from the Kiffin drama will be this...

The "buyout" or "liquidated damages" clause of coaches contracts is going to explode. That is, if Ole Miss fired Kiffin they would have owed him $36+ million. On the flip side, Lane only owes Ole miss $4 mil if HE leaves.
The solution, to protect the school, is to bump that number WAY up. Coaches will think twice about leaving if they and their new school had to pay $10-$20-$30 million to poach another school's coach.
If I'm an AD I'm putting that in my next coaches contract ASAP.

I’m worried Lane is gonna start drinking again being in Baton Rouge and it’s gonna destroy his life.

Maybe he can pray about it.

Ok, and a good coach that has suitors and leverage will just go to the competitor who doesn't have that stipulation. The fact is, the good coaches have all the leverage.

Imagine Bama loses to UGA next week and either doesn't make the playoff or goes 1 and done. They repeat this over the next season or two. At what point do they fire DeBoer? And at that point, do they do to LSU what LSU did to Ole Miss?

But it’ll never happen because the schools don’t have the leverage in these situations.
LSU to Lane: “We’re poaching you from Ole Miss! But we don’t want you bolting to another school again, so there’s a $20 million poaching clause in your contract.”
Florida to Lane: “We’re poaching you from Ole Miss! But we aren’t placing a $20 million poaching clause in your contract.”
Who do you think Lane would choose?
(Insert different variables as this is just a hypothetical using Lane as an illustration)

It would take a league wide rule otherwise coaches just wouldn’t go to schools with stiff penalties.

How long will it take LSU to leave him on the tarmac? They haven't even hired him yet & its already a shitshow

What’s the tarmac equivalent for fan boats?

Our AD prides himself on not giving coaches absurd contracts. It works great if you want to go 0-8 in conference play.

Then your tenure as AD would be severely truncated. No coach will sign up for that contract.

Ok. But here's the deal. Watch what's about to happen to Ole Miss over the next year. No coach is worth destroying a program. With the portal, enrollment deadlines and NIL, it's about to get brutal for them. When a coach leaves, it isn’t just a change in leadership. It’s immediate roster turnover, recruits de-committing, assistants leaving, NIL funds shifting, and being forced into a rushed hire because of portal deadlines. That chaos has real costs.
A buyout clause doesn’t stop a coach from leaving, but it forces serious consideration before they walk and helps stabilize the program during the transition. It’s simply responsible management: if you’re investing millions into a coach, you protect the university, the players, and the donors who are funding it.
If Kiffin/Lsu owed ole miss $20 million to leave, he'd be coaching in the playoffs this year.

If everybody did it would they have a choice? Business conditions change all the time based on the market. Kiffin just moved the bar. The market will respond in kind.

The easier option would be for the NCAA to fix the calendar and portal IMO.
But I overall agree - I don’t like the current setup at all.

I’ve never understood unidirectional exorbitant buyouts.
If you suck, we owe you $54 mill to leave.
Okay. That’s insane but I get it.
If you’re good, and Notre Dame wants you, they only pay us a $5 mill buyout.
I don’t get that, it should also be $54 mill.

But until they do, the schools are obligated to protect themselves.

It’s about who has the leverage and also minimizing distractions
Being worried about your future is a real thing, coaching a p4 program is an incredibly stressful gig with your success ultimately dictated by kids or immature adults.
Being able to think “well at least I can bank on 50m if this goes to shite” keeps you from interviewing for other jobs as soon as you smell a hot seat.
