Leaving before the season ends would be better? He's in a can't win situation here.

Elko became the next candidate for the Aggies once they were turned down by Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops on Saturday night.
The news should not come as a shock to many, despite the 46-year old claiming he would remain a Blue Devil this offseason despite reported interest from Texas A&M and Michigan State to fill their vacancies.

The expectation was that Elko would accept but cryptically leaving Duke in the early hours of the morning will certainly leave a bad taste in the mouths of Blue Devil supporters for a coach that was able to turnaround the program from irrelevancy in less than two years.

I just don't really get it in 2025. LSU is a better job than OM. Much better. But OM will match everything LSU is offering, or at least come close. He's got them rolling. He won't be in the playoffs next year at LSU even with the portal. Why go rebuild someone else if you can get the money you need at a traditional lesser program where you're already on the doorstep?

People like Kiffin doesn’t see the world or logic through the same lenses as everyone else. He is definitely safer with some 8-4 seasons (amd due to the schedule toughening they will happen) at Ole Miss but I don’t think he thinks like a normal person. I’ve always believed when he leaves Ole Miss it will be for his last job. So he needs to choose wisely. Perhaps he is realizing Bama won’t come knocking. Who knows?

Two reasons for the long term desire:
1) game day atmosphere - much better at other schools than OM. Much harder to win a night game Jordan Hare or Swamp or Kyle Field East
2) high school recruiting - can’t even crack the top 20 most years at OM. Much easier at other schools. Portal will never be preferred to home grown high school kids you’ve had for years
But you’re right, it was close enough he should’ve stayed. Plus it won’t be easy for him to win year 1. A few slip ups and he could be on the hot seat year 3-4. Let’s be real he’s never won before as a HC. If he doesn’t win and gets fired…..his legacy will be “that coach that walked out on a playoff team”

You know in this instance it appears Lane Kiffin is going to leave Ole Miss on the tarmac.

I’ve always had the theory that most coaches are somewhere on the spectrum

Lane should give Bill Frieder a call and ask him how walking out on a team that was primed for a post season run worked out for him.
