What is the case for Mendoza being the Heisman front-runner?

I have not kept up with him. Just see the headlines.

This graphic, though, doesn’t point to a dominant season for the guy. For reference, JFF averaged almost 400 ypg in 2012.

I’m not lobbying for Reed here. He hasn’t been dominant, either. I just don’t see how Mendoza is such a clear-cut favorite.

If anything, this seems to be one of those years where a guy from a team that’s not really a natty contender has the best case.

Probably the fact he’s leading Indiana to a 12-0 season and nobody else has really done anything

Indiana is 11-0

It’s insane to me that Trinidad Chambliss hasn’t gotten any attention. Hell, Kewan Lacy is 4th in rushing yards and leads the nation in rushing touchdowns at 18 and not a peep about him

If King beats UGA, I bet he wins it.

Tall order, though, obviously.

Not sure why Pavia isn’t listed here. He is averaging 305 a game.

tech hasn't played a team currently ranked in the top 40.

You don't win the heisman for facing adn beating one single good team in 12 games. The rest of tech's schedule may as well be FCS. Currently their best win is....OT against wake, I guess?

Pavia hasn't gotten it done when he had a big game opportunity this year. Nobody cares about LSU anymore

They should break it down by halfs or quarters for it to be a more meaningful stat. Generally your starting quarterback isnt throwing the ball around as much if you're leading games by a healthy margin in the second half.

Then it seems, all things being equal, either Reed or Sayin have a stronger case (just on yards).

Mendoza may be the front runner but he's far from secured it. He got a lot of love for the Penn State comeback and Indiana is a nice story that people want to reward because they are likely not going to win the Natty. He's also a really good kid and gives good interviews.

Sayin will have trouble because he is surrounded by so much talent and you could definitely argue he isn't even their best player on O. It's not like he has a rough job playing mostly cupcakes with an OL where he rarely sees pressure, a good running game, and WR's that will catch anything close and can get YAC.

Reed has the most sizzle but he's been very up and down with the SC game being the ultimate example. He does have a real possibility of having some highlight reel plays against Texas or in the SECCG that could win it for him. Today though I think he gets an invite to NYC but isn't the winner.

King is a great feel good story but agree he has to ball out against UGA to have a shot. He and Pavia get the "Senior from a mediocre team that are the heart and soul of it and are easy to root for" votes.

If it went to a RB it would be Love from ND but he isn't likely to get an invite, that dude is really, really good btw.

This year it's coming down to the finish.

RG3 had multiple big-time seasons and Texas is a massive market. Again nobody cares about Indiana even when they are good, same with Tech.

Have y'all seen the stats for TxTech LB Jacob Rodriguez?

In a year without a dominant offensive player, he should receive MAJOR consideration.

And he has the best back-story BY FAR. transferred to Tech as a backuo QB. had to sit for injury. wife is an Army pilot (Blackhawk helos).

Season stats: 97 tackles, one sack, seven forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, six pass deflections and four interceptions. Two total touchdowns (one defensive, one rushing).

Week 12 stats: Nine tackles, one interception and one pass deflection. One offensive touchdown on a carry for two yards (48-9 win over UCF).

Mendoza is the nation leader in touchdown passes, 2nd in passing efficiency, pretty sure he has the most overall tds with 35, is leading third highest scoring offense in the nation despite only finishing the game like 4 or so times this year. Cignetti could leave him out there 2-3 extra drives a game to rack up the glamour stats but he puts younger/less experienced players out there to get their reps which is what a responsible HC does.

Someone mentioned Lacy - he should be the Doak Walker winner. He doesn’t have the sexy counting yards that Hardy does, but ultimately points (tds) win games, not yards against riff raff.

Mendoza threw a winning touchdown against a team that lost 6 straight games. Obviously that big Heisman moment the media orgasmed over locked it up.

It's going to be the second straight year the Heisman winner will have beaten no one of value.

Yeah, Indiana beat Oregon and everyone is assuming that was a massive win.

But what has been Oregon's best win?

It's mid November and the Big Ten teams haven't done crap.

Nobody stands out and he's the QB on the #1 team.

He did lead a nice comeback against a bad Penn State team but his WRs made insane play after insane play to help him there.
