Former LSU football coach Brian Kelly has requested that the school pay his full buyout of nearly $54 million, according to documents obtained by The Advocate, as negotiations continue two weeks after he was fired during his fourth season.

In a Nov. 5 letter sent to LSU athletic director Verge Ausberry and LSU Board of Supervisors member John Carmouche, Kelly’s attorneys asked for written confirmation by 5 p.m. on Monday that LSU will "fulfill its contractual obligation" to pay the full sum.

The letter states Kelly would still be "open to any additional offers" to settle if he receives the written confirmation. LSU offered lump-sum payments of $25 million and $30 million the day Kelly was fired, documents said, but Kelly rejected them. They were made when Scott Woodward was still LSU’s athletic director. He and the school parted four days later.

Kelly’s contract states that if he were to be fired for cause, LSU would have to provide written notice and a statement on the grounds for the termination. Kelly would then have seven days to respond. His attorneys said in the letter LSU did not satisfy those requirements and added it would be “entirely baseless” if LSU asserted cause for firing him.

Not sure anyone at LSU is concerned with a negotiated settlement now that boosters have promised to cover the cost.

I was told that BK would take the offer because of a morals clause rumor on this board.

That doesn't seem to be the case.

If you are about to offer Cignetti $180 million over 8 years, what’s another $53 million to get rid of Kelly?

Absolutely. A contract is a contract. He is owed every dime agreed to in that contract.

Well any coaches that are considering LSU are definitely paying attention to LSU not wanting to live up to the terms of the contract.

Guarantee you they are watching and taking notes.

It's funny how people are awfully fricking blasé with other people's money.

That was the baws rationale for why BK would take a negotiated settlement instead of holding LSU's feet to the fire for the full buyout.

I don't know if he did anything and frankly I don't care what we pay the guy but I don’t understand some of you. By your logic, since LSU offered Brian Kelly a contract with that buyout, they have to pay it while completely ignoring the fact that he agreed to a morality clause that gives LSU the right to avoid paying if he violates it. So, if that clause exists, shouldn’t LSU be trying to protect its own interests under the same contract terms just like Brian Kelly would if the situation were reversed?

Pretty sad and hilarious that “boosters will cover it” with so many hungry people in our country and specifically Louisiana.

Kelly’s buy out would cover about 3.3 million meals.

A 10% tax on the pogey boats for 1 year should cover that.
