At ND, 2 playoff appearance and a National Championship Game appearance.
At LSU, fired after 3 1/2 seasons.

Different animal.
LSU is locked in a cage with Bama UGA Florida Auburn etc… ND is not and gets the benefit of the doubt.

SEC is a tough as hell conference.

LSU actually plays real teams in the regular season.
ND this year has played 2 currently ranked teams and has 2 losses(and don't play anyone else). LSU has played 3 ranked teams and has 3 losses(and plays 2 more)

Much harder to win in the SEC than at Notre Dame.

I think this is less of a critique of LSU and more of Kelly... he clearly thought it would be just as easy at LSU as he had it at Notre Dame.
I guess he didn't learn anything from that BCS 2012 title game. A&M beat us, and LSU, Ole Miss, and Georgia all came closer to beating Alabama (LSU and UGA within a score) than Notre Dame even sniffed; hell, if Alabama had kept their foot on the gas that game might have ended 56-0.
That game alone was enough of a hint that he didn't want any part of the SEC, but he was arrogant enough to take the paycheck anyway... and LSU made him rich no matter how he did.

Whenever Kelly was at Cincinnati or Notre Dame, his team got their dick kicked in by teams in big bowl games. And he skipped town before the BCS Bowl Game against Florida when Cincinnati got bent over.
What's hilarious is the guy who replaced him, Marcus Freeman, who had never been a HC before, won 2 CFP games (Georgia and Penn State) that are better than any wins that Kelly had at ND. And Freeman isn't even all that great of an in-game coach.

Why do people think this is some gotcha?
2025 Penn State and 2025 Georgia were nowhere near the level of 2020 Bama or 2018 Clemson.
IIRC, both had two regular season losses and Georgia had a first time starter at QB.
Not sure why everyone glazes Freeman for beating teams he was favored over.

Just imagine how good this guy will do once he doesn't have to deal with Notre Dame's academic requirements for student athletes.

Don’t be revisionist now. ND was all that was holding Kelly back when y’all hired him.

It shows Kelly knows how to build a program. LSU just had a bunch of mess happen and Kelly should have them in the playoff in 2026.

I don't disagree that the quality of teams (2018 Clemson and 2020 Bama) were better, but the point is that Freeman's teams perform better and are more competitive in big games than Kelly's ND and Cincinnati teams did. When he was at Cincinnati he lost by 2 touchdowns in the Orange Bowl to a 4 loss Virginia Tech team.
ND wouldn't have gone as far as they did last year if Kelly was still there. He had no track record of winning those games and would not have landed a number of key players from HS and the portal that Freeman did. Regarding the latter, Joel Klatt, on his weekly spot on a Birmingham college football show, looked at Kelly's last few years and the years since Freeman came to ND. Freeman's average rating per prospect was nearly 1 point higher than Kelly's, and his portal classes have been better than Kelly's.
And IIRC, ND had like 5-6 starters, including 2 AA caliber players, out for their playoff run.

G5 teams didn't win those kinds of games in those days, that's why the Boise State win over Oklahoma was such a huge deal.
I can't fault him for getting Cincinnati to their first 10 win seasons and BCS bowls ever and then say he should have won them.
It'd be like trying to fault Kiffin for not winning a natty at Ole Miss yet.

That's debatable.
The complaint with BK is he usually beat who he was supposed to beat but never upset better or more talented teams.
Notre Dame had more talent than both Penn State and Indiana, and Georgia had a backup quarterback. Notre Dame was favored in all of those games.

Freeman is a better recruiter than Kelly. Notre Dame is also spending more money now. They're still barely inside the top 10 as far as talent goes though.
