re: Explain to me why Kelly would take a reduced buyout?
Posted by Tigers0918 on 11/9/25 at 5:31 pm to Tiger1242
He has a clause that he has to look for work and make as much as possible. We would then owe him the difference of the $10 million per year we owe him and what he makes elsewhere.
If he settles for say $30 million, we can take that clause away. This means if he goes and makes $8 million somewhere else, the payout from LSU is no longer reduced. It also means he can retire if he wanted.

I think it is as simple as he walked away but feels like he has a little left in him after being away from coaching for 2 years.
Probably doesn't want to start over and if Bama were open, he may have gone back there, but since LSU is and it is one of his only professional regrets, may want to just come back and make amends while also getting his last few years of coaching.
It helps that LSU isn't a full rebuild. We have talent and everything in place. Additionally, with NIL you can build a playoff contender in 1 year easily.

Do we really want to be doing this again in 2 years?
Normally I would fully agree, but with the way the sport is changing so quickly right now, I don't mind a short term solution to right the ship while we let the courts continue to settle things out.
I think Kelly could have been a much better hire in the old system of stacking talent. But with all the NIL changes, he wasn't equipped to deal with it and maybe lost his edge as well.
So I don't mind as much taking a risk on a shorter term person from a smaller college. But also, if you can have a short term Saban, you can't say no to that.

Put it this way. If didn't go to LSU, would you even be considering him?
If the only reason someone is an option is because they went here, it's not the right choice.
He may end up being great, but he has a total of a few weeks DC experience with no HC experience at all. This job is a lot and just because you can coach a defense doesn't mean you can run an entire big name program. Let him learn more before giving him the head job.

We all do, but also remember he says this

they want Saban for 3 yrs at a huge price tag with full control of NIL
Of course they want Saban. He never says we are getting Saban and nobody seems to know if it is possible or not. All he is saying is the other stuff is done, and we are making a play to get Saban.

I linked the post. Chicken also posted the original message before it was edited. It is legit.
The linked post is edited like you have here, but you can see every reply is blasting him for the "dumb" sources and it would never be Kelly.

This would be the dumbest defense of Sloan ever.
So Sloan is too dumb to know you can't throw the ball in bounds with no timeouts and little time?
And Kelly is supposed to micro manage every single play calm because the OC is an idiot?
There are a million reasons to have wanted Kelly fired, but this isn't one.

No offense, but if you turn your nose up at that you’re stupid.
If we can't get a big name top coach which was a longshot before Landry did his thing(Freeman, Kiffin, Lanning). Then its better to just go the guy who is doing great at a lesser school.
A good portion of the Tenn fans are upset and ready for Heupel to move on. It would be a similar situation to Kelly.
Now, if we get him for a cheap price, that could be decent, but if we are having to pay $13+ million a year for him, that is certainly not worth it.

Heupel is at a top program and can't get it done. He has done less than Kelly did at ND and has much more resources at Tenn. So no, I don't want him either.

lets also remember that until something is signed, there is no such thing as a sure thing.
Herman has said he had an agreement but Texas came in at the last second and he went there. Insiders would have said we have Herman and it is a done deal and they would have been correct. But then the next day everyone would think they are a fool.
Fact is, we have actual insiders and wanna be insiders all putting information out, who knows whats true and fake. But also, nothing is done until it is signed.

Lane isn't coming but these bonuses pay for themselves with that type of success on the field.
Not with this idea of a contract, lol.
So if he barely gets in as a 10 seed his first year, he would get an extra $7 million. $1 million base for each remaining year plus the $1 million for that appearance.
That is steep for a single playoff appearance. What is the point of an incentive based contract if your base starts out at $10 million?

ok, can we name every failed head coach who also never had head coaching experience before?
I mean, every successful coach at one point didn't have experience, that is a dumb comparison.
The less experience someone has, the more of a crap shoot it would be.

I think a lot of people here and in Louisiana in general are really not understanding how LSU is being perceived nationally with all this crap.
It is very odd for a governor to get involved in the hiring/firing of a football coach and AD within a few days. This is not normal and really makes us look like the same ole corrupt Louisiana politics of the past.
And I'm sure a ton will reply saying they don't care either. But you not caring doesn't take away the fact that to outsiders, this is a very odd and dysfunctional situation.

The real powers of the state don’t listen to Landry.
The problem is the perception across the country is that if you take the coaching job at LSU. If the governor doesn't like you, he can get you fired. And you now have to answer to the AD and the state governor.
If its not true, then someone needs to come out and put Landry in his place, but the fact that everyone is afraid to say it means they are either all Landry puppets or proving it true because they know Landry will just have them fired if he disagrees with them.

I think it all depends who we hire.
If we get a big name splash hire, it will likely be forgotten. But if people think we "settled" for a coach, Landry will be blamed for making the job less appealing and not wanting to pay money.

he has hurt LSU without a doubt. How much is yet to be seen.
Everything done could have been done behind closed doors without airing out the dirty laundry but Landry decided he needs to be in front of the camera as much as possible and let the whole world know he is in charge of everything LSU.

Landry better hope LSU gets a homerun hire. Because he has now put himself out there on it. If we don't get the homerun guy, he will get blamed for putting LSU in a crappy position.
And now, we are having to pay an extra $6 million because he didn't like the AD. Freaking buffoon.
